Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition
Miggy sat out today. He won his fourth batting title in five seasons, coming in at .338.
The season is mercifully over. The Tigers finished 74-87, in last place, and they will have a top-10 pick in next year's draft. The fact that they finished with a bottom-10 record across MLB also means that if they sign a major free agent, they are in no danger of losing that pick, regardless of whether the FA was offered arbitration by their former club. That's good, because we need free agents, and probably a couple big ones.
So. In a nutshell, as we sit here the night the season ends, below is a very rough cut of where I think we stand, and where we need to go.
Outfield: Gose, JD, and Collins. I think Davis is gone, and we need another option in LF, to platoon with Collins, at the minimum. Moya does not appear to be ready at this point.
Infield: Castellanos, Iglesias, Kinsler, and Miggy, with Romine as a utility infielder and Victor as the DH/1B to spell Miggy. I think we can get by here for one more year, although it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see a move made at 2B or 3B.
Catcher: McCann. I think Alex Avila has played his last game in Detroit, but I wouldn't be blown away if he returned in a back-up role. I do not believe that Bryan Holaday is a major league caliber catcher. I think we need to sign a backup catcher here.
Pitching: Ohhhhh boy. Here we go. Get a cup of coffee.
Starting pitching: Verlander, Sanchez, Norris. Verlander was Verlander after the first couple starts. I've got to believe that Sanchez was far more injured than he let on, given his history, and Norris was very sharp at times. I don't want Simon back at any price, nor is Matthew Boyd ready, and Shane Greene can stay in Toledo until he gets his act together. I don't care if that takes 10 years. Bottom line, we need 2 starting pitchers, and we can't go shopping at the clearance rack on either one of them. A $5 million starter is like a $5,000 used car. You're not going to be happy over the long haul.
Bullpen: I think we might have something in Alex Wilson, Blaine Hardy, and VerHagen. VerHagen may be able to pitch the 7th inning, Hardy is a situational lefty, and Alex Wilson can probably handle the 8th. I cannot count on Al Al any longer to be consistent. Same with Ian Krol. Bruce Rondon has some serious issues to work through before he can be trusted with anything. Neftali Feliz can get out of town immediately, if not sooner. Someday Buck Farmer may develop into someone you turn to if you need a long reliever in the 3rd or 4th inning, but that's it. He is not a starter. I can't rely on anyone else in that bullpen at this juncture. I think we need three bullpen arms, plus a closer.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition
Okay.
The K-Rod trade is a nice deal. We give up a high-A infielder for, effectively, 2 years of Rodriguez as the closer. That's fine. Betancourt was blocked by Iggy and Machado anyway.
The Maybin deal is fine, on its face. But this CANNOT be the answer for whatever we're going to do with left field. Gose and Maybin can split center field, or they can play left and center from time to time. But we need an every day left fielder.FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY: 2012 FROZEN FOUR
