The K-Rod trade is a nice deal. We give up a high-A infielder for, effectively, 2 years of Rodriguez as the closer. That's fine. Betancourt was blocked by Iggy and Machado anyway.
The Maybin deal is fine, on its face. But this CANNOT be the answer for whatever we're going to do with left field. Gose and Maybin can split center field, or they can play left and center from time to time. But we need an every day left fielder.
I don't like the idea of giving up on Davis, either. They have gone from having an all-star in LF last season to having the JV kid from De La Salle out there.
Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition
The problem with Davis is, he turned 35 last month. His biggest asset is his speed, and that is going to be going sooner rather than later, at his age. And I'm not overly impressed with his defense or arm. Let someone else give him a 3-year deal.
We got what we wanted from Davis. We got full value, but it's time to part ways and go get an everyday left fielder. IMO, neither Maybin nor Tyler Collins is the everyday answer in LF.
Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition
Tigers apparently signed Zimmerman to 5 yrs, $110 million contract

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 9: The Carlos Guillen edition
David Price to the Red Sox: $217 for 7
Jordan Zimmerman to the Tigers: $110 for 5
The Red Sox just laid out nearly twice the money for Price than the Tigers did for Zimmerman, for only two more years of service when Price is in his late 30's. Now, I will happily concede that Price is the better pitcher, but that's an awfully large premium to be paid for the difference in quality.

Additionally, an opt-out after 3 years and no deferred money.

I hope Zim has something left with his fastball or this division will eat him alive. Can't complain with the move too much though considering what is left of a one time all star rotation.

Yes, agree but his offense offset his deficiencies on defense. But we both agree that we have no answer in left field yet coming into Spring training.
