Obama doesn't care what the politics are anymore. This is just one step in a slow diplomatic escalation. I'm sure he has also back-channeled with responsible Republicans who will try to see that we keep slowly increasing the pressure on Moscow after Obama is out of office as best they can. The incoming administration will probably f-ck it up, but Obama can't control that.

The same can be said for allowing the settlements to be condemned. Having the keys about to be turned over to a toddler is weirdly freeing. We don't have to worry about continuity because we know the children are about to ruin everything, so we do a few things we always should have done because they're the right thing to do.

Add WaPo to the list of purveyors of fake news.

Despite what you might have read in this alarming story in the Washington Post, Russia did not hack Vermont's power authority.

Here's what really happened: in the aftermath of the US government's statements about Russian state-implicated hacking of the US election, government departments across the country audited their systems, looking for instances of the malware that was implicated in the DNC hack. One laptop at the Vermont utility -- not connected to the grid -- was found to have been infected by this malware, which is available for purchase by anyone through the criminal, underground marketplaces for hacking tools.

There's a lot of room between "Russia pwned Vermont's power-grid" and "a single computer was compromised by Russian-made malware that anyone can buy and use."

Remember "we are all Georgians now"?

Somebody needs to give our politicians a lesson in geography and spheres of influence. We stole Poland, they get Ukraine. Fair's fair.

Considering there's a good chance that Poland, or Ukraine, represent a good percentage of my genes, what exactly do you mean by that?

I mean there are enough Poles in Chicago and Pittsburgh to stand up against the Russians, but there aren't enough Ukrainians, Belarus, or Ruthenians. And before you invoke your ancestors mine are Slovak and they're not on the right side of the line, either.

We're actually in much better shape than during the Warsaw Pact. The East Germans, the Poles, and the Czechs are all safe and sound. Baby steps.

Are you just talking about immigrants? That's what I get out of this. In which case, you're probably right.

Those guys go way back. There was a time, and not even that long ago (400 years) when the Poles were serious badas-ses. The Poles had bad timing and ran into Peak Gustavus Adolphus the Great, or it might have been they and the Lithuanians running Eastern Europe from the Baltic all the way to the Black Sea instead of that backwards Muscovite trash.

Huh. Wiki says it peaked in the early 17th century, so 1600s. And they had joint rulers? Wow.

Do you know if there are books about it?

I suspect there are, but I haven't run into a good one yet and I really hunt hard for histories of Eastern Europe (some people collect stamps...). If you find one please let me know.

Sadly some of the best historical information is in books about the Prussian push east and the Russian push west. Poland was caught in that vice and the Habsburgs weren't smart enough to realize a strong Poland was their only way to stay relevant.

The other interesting thing is the Poles had a moment when their throne was up for grabs (as it often was) in which they could have chosen to go with the Bohemian elector. Had they done that, they might have been able to build a very strong commercial power with access to the Baltic and the Danube, and they might have been in the running for the smaller German states when Prussia and Hanover started rolling up the small fry into the German Empire. Bavaria at least would probably have gone with them, and that's a pretty strong secondary right there. Woulda coulda shoulda.
