40 states down, 10 to go. One's really tough to drive to, though.

Agreed. Nobody likes driving to Wisconsin.

Been there. Loved it, outside of the $4 gas.

It wasn't much fun at 65 MPH, I'll give you that.

If FlagDUDETTE and I hadn't already done a major road trip this year, I'd consider driving to Alaska, and in between sightseeing, take in the Brice Goal Rush. Oh well, perhaps another time.

Actually saw some of that on my road trip. Granted, it was in a fairly deserted stretch of land where you'd be likely to see one of those "no gas for 100 miles" signs (although it wasn't that far).

So for the Denver, CC, Air Force, and like fans out there: What's up with the 85 octane gas? I hear people claim it's because of altitude, but doesn't it still end up doing damage to vehicle engines rated at 87 or higher?

No damage, it's for use in 87 octane vehicles - due to the high altitude.

It's safe. The issue with lower octane is that it can combust TOO quickly in your engine cylinder, which leads to engine knocking. The reduced oxygen supply at altitude makes the fuel harder to combust, so you can run 85 no problem.

I usually run 87 in my Wrangler anyway in case I end up out of state at lower altitude.

Ending up at lower altitude is definitely a reason why I didn't go for the 85 (or 86 in New Mexico and Amarillo TX), since the trip was cross-country. I guess I could understand if you stay at altitude, though. Was certainly glad to find non-ethanol in a few places, though, and at respectable prices, too.

It's awesome, especially if you are single and like to party. A bit expensive.

This time in the Twin Cities:

-Gotten off the train at Union Depot. That is a major upgrade over the previous train station, which felt like an outdated dump.

-Visited the XCel Energy Center for a Wild game. the Wild won 6-1, and I rather enjoyed my first NHL game. Even the 8.75 for a can of beer was expected.

-Visited the Dinkytown neighborhood. Wanted to go to Al's Breakfast, but there was a line out the door. Ended up going to Tony's Diner instead, and to Insomnia Cookies afterward.

-Red's Savoy Inn makes a good chicken sandwich, too. Will be going back there after the marathon tomorrow for pizza.

-And I think I should go to one more restaurant tomorrow for dinner. I know Gasthof's is a possibility... or if anyone can recommend a good meat and potatoes place, I am all ears. I'm rather weary of sandwiches.

Did you try to get into Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit? You'd have been disappointed, if you tried. New ownership took over operations with the conclusion of Oktoberfest and they're closed for the next few weeks to do a complete remodel of the building.

You're the first person I've ever heard of going into Red's Savoy and order something other than a pizza for food.

I'm told that unless you get to Al's right when it opens it's waiting out the door.

Insomnia Cookies does most of its business at night, a big rush at bar close, and delivery orders galore to places that smell a big skunky.
