I can get non stop (10 hrs) from Dulles -> Honolulu in a 767 via United for $1,100.
I'll gladly fly Southwest, just to stay away from United. /shrug

Who knows which west coast cities WN will fly to the islands from, they have a pretty large presence out there. For example, I know I can fly Tampa to Las Vegas nonstop, if they offer Las Vegas to Hawaii, that isn't too bad.

Of course, I say these things admitting that it's a rare thing that I don't sit in the exit row.

Yes, but I believe it only works between two iPhones (iMessage), or if you use Facebook Messenger or Google Chat. Plain SMS still requires a cell signal.

Montreal was fun, but a bit slow this time of year. It's basically Les Habs, food/cafes/live music, parks (until it snows - then Mont-Tremblant), and museums (which are only open 4-5 days a week during the offseason). Probably would go back during festival season June-Sept, and see about taking the train to Quebec City for a few days as well. Was told that my French needs to be better to comfortably leave MTL though. I guess QC is where the real separatist snobs are.

If you stick to the tourist avenues, you won't have a lot of trouble with language. There were a couple of establishments in Mont Royal where I felt like I was maybe getting a bit of a cold shoulder due to my rudimentary French, but I just quickly bowed out. There's more restaurants and cafes per capita up there than almost any other city in North America, so it's very easy to move on and try somewhere else if things aren't going well.

The bagels are great, the "smoked meat" (it's pastrami...shhh, don't tell) is outstanding, the poutine...well, it's poutine (still not as crazy about it as some are), and if you like eating haute cuisine, you can presently do it cheaper in Montreal than in US hubs like New York, Chicago, or San Francisco, thanks to the CAD/USD exchange rate.

There's also a really good museum in the Old Port area that doubles as an active archaeological dig into the city's roots going back to the 1600s - it's called Pointe-à-Callière.

And you should definitely see an NHL game in Canada if you haven't already, but that goes without saying.

Many times. While I only drove through Split at night, Dubrovnik is great - maybe the best in the region for an average western tourist. Enough beauty/development and enough eastern European flair to make it more interesting than western Europe. And they filmed a good chunk of game of thrones there.

I would parlay a week into 3 days in Dubrovnik and 3 days in nearby slightly more rustic but beautiful Montenegro. Croatia is where the Balkan hills run into the Adriatic...Montenegro is where the Balkan mountains run into the Adriatic. Montenegro has been rated the top country in the world for tourist opportunity by the UN's tourism board for years - due its sheer beauty. It has a stunning coastline, a coastal beach Riviera (Budva region) with an ancient island community St. Stephan, an inland lakes region (Podgorica), an area of Norwegian style fjords (Kotor area), inland skiing in the mountainous inland region...and a multitude of beautiful beaches tucked under 200 foot cliffs (I.e., Mogren beach). It had one of its beaches rated the most beautiful in the world...and is the home of the hotel Splendid of James Bond Casino royale fame (though the movie was not shot there). I'd go to Kotor and Budva/Becici...and further south down the coast if you have time. Full disclosure I own property in Montenegro.
Well I'm writing to you from Kotor and it's terrific. We didn't have time to go to Budva but we have gone to several cities in Dalmatia as well as Zagreb, and so far this is the best scenery, (not that Dalmatia is bad, it's not at all.) Kind of like Switzerland with the sea next door. We came in over the mountains from the nw side thru Bosnia -Herzegovina, and the border crossing wasn't too bad into Montenegro whereas at other crossings it can be.
The Bay of Kotor is totally beautiful and we are just really impressed. I did not find the prices here to be on the super cheap side. accommodations, yes, but food no. Dalmatia was a bit cheaper.
We witnessed a guy in too much of a hurry who passed us on a narrow road, and 10 minutes later was sideways in the middle, having gone off both sides and ripped off the entire under tray of his car.
Anyway, great spot and thanks for the recommendation. I'm coming back here again next year for longer.
One caveat... this is the off season here, in season the old town of Kotor has 10,000 visitors per day and three cruise ships. it has 400 permanent residents.

Gonna head back to Marquette, MI for 4 days in two weeks. Hockey is a main draw of course since it's NMU/Tech weekend, but I'm mostly looking forward to a full day and two mornings of Steelhead fishing in Da Yoop. Sick of dealing with human trash when fishing urban Steelhead in places like Milwaukee and Grand Rapids and I'm downright shocked that I haven't stumbled upon a meth lab fishing the Indiana creeks. Just don't have "clean" options for single day trips from Chicago. It's been 10 years since I've been able to put any time on the water up that way and holy crap was I oblivious to what I had at my disposal while going to school at NMU....

So, I basically have about 36 hours in Seoul next month. Arrive ~4:30 PM KST on Friday Dec. 15th, depart ~11:30 AM on Sunday Dec. 17th.

Booked the Millennium Hilton with points, but obviously I wanna do this Bourdain "The Layover" style, and just use my hotel as a crashpad.

Do I have the time/ability on Saturday to visit the DMZ and the Bridge of No Return? Or is it too far/has restrictions, and there is better stuff to do in town on a quick, whirlwind trip?

Anything I need to be sensitive to/aware of culturally, as an Anglo American slob?

And mookie, if you're reading this, I already know what your advice will be (NSFW!)

I highly recommend the DMZ tour. Make sure you get the one that also stops at the JSA, where you can step across the border in the conference room. They sell out quickly so book it in advance. We took the one that leaves from the front gate of the Yongsan Garrison.
