Except maybe there is no middle. I am more and more convinced that there are five sets of voters:

+ Motivated righties who vote on issues and vote in primaries
+ Unmotivated righties who vote on issues but only vote, if at all, in the general
+ Motivated lefties who vote on issues and vote in primaries
+ Unmotivated lefties who vote on issues but only vote, if at all, in the general
+ The Great Unwashed who only vote in the general and vote on the candidate's image

If that's the case, moving to the center for the general is bad politics. The successful play is to hold onto your extreme primary views to drive your unmotivated partisans to the polls (OHNOES! THE WORLD IS ENDING!!!! BENGHAZI!!!) but also speak in stentorian tones about holding fast to your, ahem, principles.

I think we may be screwed anyway...

... but, I don't think partisanship is always bad. The appropriate response to a crisis, for example, is not to appease the portion of the population that doesn't regard it as a crisis but to solve it without their permission, support, or input. Sometimes one side is just wrong and it needs to lose badly.

Also, partisanship may help reach useful horsetrades. People are typically only willing to give up a lot in a negotiation if they are committed to getting something specific accomplished. So maybe someday we'll get real gun control in exchange for allowing prayer in schools, or we'll get real financial reform in exchange for letting the wealthy publicly urinate on the homeless on national holidays, or whatever. I can imagine a situation where a hyper-partisan mob of Occupiers and a hyper-partisan mob of Teahadists agrees that although in every other way they are enemies, they at least can agree to string up every New Yorker earning more than $1M a year.

And that would be progress of a sort.

What about your Mets? I couldn't care less about the team in the Bronx or the basketball team playing at 34th & 7th.

They mostly don't live in NYC, but now you mention it, Harvey could be in a spot of trouble.

But somebody needs to figure out the limits of executive power otherwise we really could end up with an emperor/dictator. Sooner is way better than later.

Funny how the limits of executive power only became a talking point now.

Kinda like how deficits only matter at certain points in time too. We should see if there is a common factor....

Funny. When liberals tried to question executive power we were told it was treasonous and we hated America. CJ Roberts and Alito (and maybe Thomas and Scalia) are on board with the whole "unitary executive" idea so we don't even need a Congress.

Equally as funny is how those same liberals don't question the issue now. Hypocrisy runs rampant in both parties.

Why should we? We were told it wasn't important, so we moved on to other things.

To be fair, back in 2002, anyone who didn't have a dollar store, "Made in China" American flag flying from their car window was automatically given the hairy eyeball in some parts of the country.
