Re: RPI Pick to Click 2014-15: Under New Management

Congratulations to the Engineers for their exhibition victory and to the six contestants to collect "points" for this exhibition week of Pick to Click.

Tyler Brown's (hawthr and vizoroo) goal and assist were good for three PtC points, making him the best choice among Panthers. RPI's captain Curtis Leonard (no one) broke out for two goals and six PtC points. Neither starting goalie registered a quality start, so neither was worth any PtC points (sorry FlagDUDE).

    Results:
    5 + 1 "ultra exhibition points"
    vizoroo

    3 "super not real points"
    hawthr

    2 "mega fake points"
    lugnut92
    RPI fan 4 life
    RKarger

    1 "exhibition point"
    engineerhockeyfan

    Nothing at all.
    FlagDUDE08
    Ralph Baer
    rsfs04
    RHamilton

Unfortunately for vizoroo (and fortunately for the four who got shut out), none of this counts, and everyone will start at zero for the real season.

Link back to the first post with details on scoring

The real season gets underway this weekend and what better way to start the regular season than with a tournament to screw up all of the rules. The Engineers are flying to South Bend to take on Notre Dame and either Minnesota or Minnesota-Duluth in the IceBreaker.

Scoring is normal, but picking is not. Instead of picking one player for each team in each RPI game, you will pick one player from each team for the whole tournament. This means that you will receive points not only for the RPI games, but also the UM-UMD matchup and the ND-UM(D) game. That said, shootouts don’t count.

To encourage a little variety and prevent gaming the system too much, only one of your four selections can be a goalie.

Picks must be in by puck drop of the Minnesota - Minnesota-Duluth game at 2:00 PM EDT.

You may NOT choose the following players for this game:
      Everyone is eligible!

      Statistics and Rosters
      RPI: 13-14 Statistics | 14-15 Roster
      Notre Dame: 13-14 Statistics | 14-15 Roster (Beware C. Petersen / G. Peterson confusion)
      Minnesota: 13-14 Statistics | 14-15 Roster (Beware C. / M. / R. Reilly confusion)
      Minnesota-Duluth: 13-14 Statistics | 14-15 Roster (Beware A. / B. Young confusion)

I know what you mean. I waited too long to try and figure out your spreadsheet so I made a quick Python script to do it. Only problem is I can't figure out a good way to parse game sheets.

Edit: Thanks about the QS. Anyone who doesn't like it can blame me reading the goaltending analytics section of Rob Vollman's Hockey Abstract two or three days before I put together the intro post.

Their box score is just a space-delimited text file. So, the first thing to parse for is the rosters. They'll be after the score and shots, so the earliest row that they can be in is 20 (assuming you've grabbed the whole header). I check the position for a W, C, or F to indicate a forward; D and G are pretty straightforward. The uniform number can be ignored. The points are slightly annoying to parse because Excel keeps wanting to make them into dates, but you shouldn't have that difficulty if you deal with it in python.

Getting all the way past the goals / penalties box score is slightly cumbersome, but I just skip down to Row 52 (even a game with no goals or penalties has at least that many rows) and check Columns 3 - 11 for "Goaltending." You have to go all the way to column 11 because of the US U-18 team. The goalie parsing was done to quickly check for complete game shutouts and because the decision would be inside parenthesis. Since you're doing it by save percentage, you might need to do that by hand.

Or I can put it in by hand and pray for low scoring games. Or rather, games where all of the points go to a couple of players.
