Vegas sucked in the 80's -- it was awful. Then they figured out how to thrive by going all in on the joke. The Strip is now just performance art. It's the most Absurdist place this side of Alfred Jarry's bathroom; I love it there.

The other thing about Vegas, albeit less relevant for a weekend hockey trip, is if you go 30 minutes west to the edge of the caldera, or 30 minutes east to the rocks, it's one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
I was there four weeks ago. It is indeed absurd but calling it art of any type implies that they actually recognize that it's absurd - like as if Vegas is the inversion of hipsters going to TGI Friday's for the sake of irony. I don't think that's actually the case. I mean, I guess that isn't necessary for one to enjoy basking in the absurdity, but it doesn't do it for me.

All that being said, Red Rocks is gorgeous, and the Hoover Dam is magnificent (in a nerdy way).

I think they're in on it. But then again, I'm very forgiving -- I always think preachers and politicians are in on their jokes, too.

The best capture of LV's special ambiance I've read is HST's:

"The Circus-Circus is what the whole hep world would be doing Saturday night if the Nazis had won the war. This is the Sixth Reich. The ground floor is full of gambling tables, like all the other casinos . . . but the place is about four stories high, in the style of a circus tent, and all manner of strange County-Fair/Polish Carnival madness is going on up in this space."
I'm pretty sure they're winking. I hope so, anyway.

Maybe if the Las Vegas Bidding Committee attaches some kind of child molestation activity to their bid the NCAA would be swayed. They seem to actually like organizations that condone the rape of kids.
