It's really frustrating to watch a good friend repeatedly commit financial suicide... I've known the guy since high school and he's never been really good with his money... But the past year has been really rough watching the stupid spending and financial decisions kick into overdrive... It's getting to the point where stuff is getting cartoonishly stupid (like not realizing that a $1200 payday loan would result in a payment of about $225/week and something that needed to be paid back ASAP... Also filling out his W-4 so taxes are NOT withheld and then simply not paying anything or filing taxes when he learned in April that he owes a significant amount to Uncle Sam)... The guy is now one minor screw-up away from losing utilites and even worse, his townhouse... And yet the stupidity continues... I feel like I have the horse at the water trough, but the horse simply refuses to put his head down and take a drink
It's never too early to start the Pre-game festivities

One of the greatest innovations in commuter travel in the past decade has been the advent of "quiet cars." One car of the train is designated as a "quiet car" in which no cell phone usage is allowed, all speakers on computers, etc. are turned off. So why would people, knowing in advance that they are entering a quiet car, proceed to have a conversation for much of their trip? Grr.

Was sternly asked why on one of my projects I didn't pave an intersection. Explained that between the project switching between being done by the contractor, then done by the city, and then by us again, along with a couple other utility conflicts, I skipped it because that's what I was told at the time.

Boss who told me now wants the intersection paved because it was "our mistake" and needed to be done.

I have a hunch the I'm going to get removed from this project come winter. The boss has nit picked the projects I've been assigned and every time it seems like I make things smooth and the projects are going well, random crap like this comes up.

Get that crap in writing! (or should I put that in the advice thread?)

            Definitely the advice thread.

or even better, you send an email that says "this email is to confirm our conversation this morning, in which you told me....."

Yep - I almost wrote that, too - if you can't get them to put it in writing, you have to do it yourself. And back up your email at least weekly.

I would still say that it's better to get them to write it down, though - if you write it down, it's your words and they honestly may not see it to quibble over the exact phrasing. If *he* writes it, he can't argue semantics or spin later, since they're his own words.

Since I'm the field inspector for these projects, I am tasked with keeping a field book with notes for all these projects. This little tidbit has already definitely been included in it.

Thanks to being in the construction industry for so long, I'm fully aware of being in "C.Y.A." mode all the time.

Tell that to my employer. All of our browser-based apps are designed for IE. I use Firefox at home.

Agreed. People think it's easy to just stop using something like that.

Should be interesting for my employer as well.

My doorbell went off 4 times at 1 am (and all different "songs"). I think it's the frequency the doorbell uses - and I already fixed it once. This grinds my gears.

Somehow, the National Weather Service sends broadcast text messages to all cell phones in our metropolitan area. Nice to have an insistent beeping at 5:18 AM to let us know it is raining heavily! (as if the drumming sound on the roof wasn't enough)

I have all of those alerts turned off on my phone. I have no interest it getting a blaring alarm for storms, amber alerts, etc.
