  • The 2013 New England Patriots

Figured I'd kick this off, with the draft starting tonight. The Patriots are in a much different position this year, with only five picks (and no picks in rounds 4-6). Wide receiver is the most glaring need, but several mocks I've seen have them picking a cornerback. Likeliest is probably a trade down and out of the first round. There's some noise about trading Mallett to pick up a pick too, but I doubt that happens.

I hope they get someone with a high motor!

I've always respected the way the Pats draft. Always willing to move down. Wish my team would do more of this.

Adam Schefter floating some crazy rumor about the Vikings trading three picks to NE to get a third first-rounder, so they can take Teo.

Huh. Not so crazy after all. So instead of having five picks total, NE moved out of the first and now has:

            Round 2: 52 (from Minnesota)
            Round 2: 59
            Round 3: 83 (from Minnesota)
            Round 3. 91
            Round 4: 102 (from Minnesota)
Round 7: 226 (from Tampa Bay)
            Round 7: 229 (from Minnesota)
            Round 7: 235

I would say "Stay classy Jets fans" but they'd have to have some class in the first place.

Jets and Bills have each picked three times before the Pats' first selection.

A second-round receiver? What could possibly go wrong?

Round 2 (52): Jamie Collins, OLB, Southern Mississippi
Round 2 (59): Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall

Re: The 2013 New England Patriots

So that's it for tonight. Can't say I have a great feeling about this draft so far (second/third-round WR/DBs?!), but time will tell. One underrated aspect of their continued excellence is that they do a great job filling glaring needs before the draft -- either by contract extension or free agency -- so that they don't have to reach. On the other hand, because of the terrible Haynesworth/Ochocinco trades, they had to drop back significantly in that Minnesota trade in order to recoup the picks they traded for stiffs. But of course they can't hit on every move.

I'd guess they go DT or interior OL in the fourth round tomorrow, if they pick. They'll probably trade back.

Round 2 (52): Jamie Collins, OLB, Southern Mississippi
Round 2 (59): Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall
Round 3 (83): Logan Ryan, DB, Rutgers
                          Round 3 (91): Duron Harmon, S, Rutgers
                          Round 4: 102 (from Minnesota)
Round 7: 226 (from Tampa Bay)
                          Round 7: 229 (from Minnesota)
                          Round 7: 235

We got our fallback when it turns out Dobson can't learn the playbook/get on the same page as Brady!

Round 2 (52): Jamie Collins, OLB, Southern Mississippi
Round 2 (59): Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall

Round 4 (102): Josh Boyce, WR, TCU
Round 7: 226 (from Tampa Bay)
                              Round 7: 229 (from Minnesota)
