It's gameday!

Puck is set to drop at 3:00pm Eastern. I'll be providing recaps at each intermission, and then will post a link to the full game recap when it finishes.

Also, remember that the Clarkson-Michigan State game will also be played at the same time today, but without a full game recap. I'll have those updates for everyone too as that game progresses.

Puck is about to drop in this one. National Anthem was lively, as Meat Loaf brought it down American-style. I'll be back after the first with an update.

UPDATE: 3:50p Eastern

What a tremendous first twenty minutes of action! Both teams were eager to try and get the first goal, but it would be Ken Dryden and Garth Snow that would get the better of the shooters in the opening frame. Martin Mercier nearly notched the first goal, but his wrister that was labeled for the top shelf was robbed by Dryden. We're scoreless after one peiod of action here at the Garden, despite Maine outshooting Cornell 14-7.

UPDATE: 5:20p Eastern

Had a little issue with the internet, but what a game we have going on here in Boston. Dan Lodboa scored for the Big Red about midway through the second period to put Cornell up 1-0. It looked like it might stay 1-0 after forty minutes, but then Patrice Tardiff scored for Maine to knot the game at one apiece. That is where the second period ended. Cornell then scored early in the third on a Brian Cornell goal, to put the Big Red back up 2-1. Would it be enough for Dryden? Would Maine muster a comeback?

#16 - 1955-1956 Clarkson Golden Knights vs. #81 - 1985-1986 Michigan State Spartans

UPDATE: 4:00p Eastern

Just got the report in from the Clarkson - Michigan State Game. Sounds like a barn-burner down in Philadelphia, as the Golden Knights and Spartans are all square at 2 apiece after twenty minutes of play.

UPDATE: 6:10p Eastern

This game went into overtime after a crazy 4-4 regulation finish where Clarkson had to score twice in the final five minutes to tie the game. It wouldn't take the Golden Knights long once the extra session started, as Ed Rowe notched a goal just 1:19 into overtime to put the Golden Knights into the Round of 16.

Elsewhere, 1977-1978 BU knocked off 1955-1956 Michigan with three early goals, and held on to win 5-3. They'll move on to the Round of 16.

For those of you following, the North Dakota-Wisconsin game that was supposed to be done this past Thursday had to be rescheduled due to my brother-in-law getting married. I will probably do 2 games one of the weeks, but there is also the chance that if I get a bit of extra time that I will post it on a Friday or Saturday. I'll try to give as much advanced notice as possible.

As for this Thursday's tilt, it is on as scheduled.

They moved up their wedding date on short notice (i.e. told everyone this past Tuesday that they were going to get married this Saturday when they previously didn't have a date set). I had to rearrange my schedule so I could fly out Friday. It was crazy, and my wife was extremely stressed out...but it went well.

It was a shot-gun marriage.

That's what we all thought at first. It turns out that they got an extremely good deal on a honeymoon ($295 (total) for a 7-day all-inclusive package on Riviera Maya in Mexico), and debated about it. They talked about it with the bride's parents and they were on board, so they jumped at the chance.

Round of 32 - Northeast Regional
Madison Square Garden - New York, NY (where else would it be today!)

Absolutely tremendous atmosphere at the Garden for this September 11th showdown. The crowd is full of red and white and they are trying to keep their eyes dry after one of the most beautiful performances of the national anthem I have ever seen. The crowd went nuts as Madonna came out to sing the Star Spangled Banner, and the Material Girl went patriotic as she had the entire crowd sing the anthem with her. Nothing like 18,000+ people belting out the National Anthem...truly a tearjerker of a moment and one that this tournament will be remembered for.

Puck is just about to drop. I'll be back after the first twenty are in the books to provide a short recap.

FIRST PERIOD:
Through twenty minutes we're all knotted up at 1-1. RPI scored first when John Carter scored on a rebound about midway through. RPI nearly scored again, but Bob DiPronio's wrister was stopped by Dan Brady. It looked like RPI would have the one goal edge after twenty minutes, but BU's Toot Cahoon tipped in a shot from the blue line. It has been a pretty even game with RPI having the slight edge in chances here early. Shots are 11-7 Engineers after one. I'll be back after the second to give another update!

SECOND PERIOD:
Another great period of action, as both sides are doing their best to take control. Each team had powerplay chances, but were unable to convert. Rensselaer finally got the edge when John Carter found George Servinis in the slot. Servinis ripped a wrister five hole that Brady couldn't stop and the Engineers took a 2-1 lead with under 5 to go. However, with just 11 seconds to play in the middle stanza, the Terriers struck back, this time Bob Gryp made a tremendous individual effort in the offensive zone and scored on a wraparound after winning a puck battle behind the net. Through forty minutes of play, we're all square at 2 apiece.

THIRD PERIOD:

What a tremendous finish to this one. The score remained all knotted at 2 apiece midway through the final stanza, but a flurry of goals advanced one of these teams...which one?

OTHER ACTION: 1961-1962 Michigan Tech Huskies vs. 2011-2012 Boston College Eagles

Reports coming in from the other Northeast Regional Round of 32 matchup left. BC and Michigan Tech are tied at 3-3 through forty minutes.

update - Michigan Tech has scored early in the third to take a 4-3 lead. 16:45 left to go.

update - Michigan Tech holds on to defeat Boston College 5-4. The Huskies had scored with just under four minutes to play to go up 5-3, but BC rallied scoring with 44 seconds and nearly got the equalizer, but Johnny Gaudreau's wrister clipped the crossbar with 7 seconds to play. Tech advances to the Round of 16.
