Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

      Coming in at #31...

      St. Cloud State - 21.1894

The Huskies had their program's best season to date, winning the MacNaughton Cup for the first time, and also making their first trip to the Frozen Four. SCSU gained just under 7.5 points this season, and if they continue this success, look for the Huskies to keep moving up the rankings. Last season, SCSU was ranked #33.

      Coming in at #32...

      Brown - 20.6818 Points

The Bears had their first winning season in nearly a decade, and coupled with Yale's national title, Brown gained just over 2 points. Brown should be a team on the rise next season, so the Bears could see themselves moving up the list if they continue to have quality seasons like this past campaign. Last season, Brown was ranked #30.

      Coming in at #33...

      Ohio State - 18.5065 Points

The Buckeyes finished in the top four of the CCHA, and finished with a 16-17-7 record. OSU added just over 1 point to their total. With a new coach at the helm, the Buckeyes will look to repeat the success that they had under John Markell when they made the NCAA Tournament 6 times in a 12 year stretch. Last season, Ohio State was ranked #31.

      Coming in at #34...

      Vermont - 16.4983 Points

The Catamounts struggled to an 11-19-6 record, but just barely squeaked into the Hockey East Playoffs. Vermont added roughly a 1/2 point to their totals this season, and will look to recapture the magic from 2009 when they nearly made it to the National Championship game. Last season, Vermont was ranked #32.

      Coming in at #35...

      Massachusetts-Lowell - 14.4537 Points

Similar to SCSU, the Riverhawks had arguably their greatest season in program history. Lowell won the Hockey East Regular Season and Tournament Championships, along with the program's first Frozen Four birth. Expectations will only go up from here, and if the Riverhawks can keep this streak going, they should keep climbing the ranks. Lowell was ranked #37 last season.

      Coming in at #36...

      Bemidji State - 12.2673 Points

The Beavers struggled to a 6-22-8 record, and an 11th spot finish in the WCHA this past season. As a result, the Beavers lost nearly 1/10 of a point. BSU will look for better success in the revamped WCHA. Last season, Bemidji State was ranked #34.

      Coming in at #37...

      Union - 11.6362 Points

The Dutchmen had another tremendous season, capturing the ECAC Tournament Title, making the NCAA Tournament and knocking off defending national champion Boston College. Unfortunately for Union, they did not have a very good record against Yale historically, which hurt them in the overall rankings. However, if Union can continue the pace that they are on, expect the Dutchmen to rise in the rankings. Last season, Union was ranked #35.

      Coming in at #38...

      RIT - 9.6441 Points

The Tigers had a disappointing campaign, going 15-18-5 on the season. Next season, RIT will look to regain the form that they had from just a few years ago that had them in contention for the Atlantic Hockey title, and also led them to the Frozen Four. Last season, RIT was ranked #36.

      Coming in at #39...

      Niagara - 8.1791 Points

The Purple Eagles had a tremendous campaign last season, going 23-10-5 en route to the Atlantic Hockey Regular Season title, and an NCAA Tournament appearance. If the Purple Eagles can continue this play in the next few seasons, they have the opportunity to rise a few spots in the rankings, as this season Niagara added nearly 1.5 points to their totals. Last season, Niagara was ranked #39.

      Coming in at #40...

      Western Michigan - 7.6937 Points

The Broncos had a disappointing end to their season, where they finished third in the CCHA with a 19-11-8 overall record. As a result, the Broncos added nearly 1/2 of a point to their totals. If the Broncos can continue their strong play, look for Western to move back up the rankings in the future. Last season, Western Michigan was ranked #38.

      31. SCSU - 21.1894 Points
      32. Brown - 20.6818 Points
      33. Ohio State - 18.5065 Points
      34. Vermont - 16.4983 Points
      35. Massachusetts-Lowell - 14.4537 Points
      36. Bemidji State - 12.2673 Points
      37. Union - 11.6362 Points
      38. RIT - 9.6441 Points

After you're done with this list, can you reverse the results of the national championship? You've mentioned several times that ECAC programs improved because Yale won the title...I'm curious how AHA teams would have improved if former member Quinnipiac had won...

I can't promise anything, but I'll try. It takes quite some time on my end to switch those around. It probably won't happen until after the top 100 tournament is done though. Remind me over in that thread when we get a winner, and I'll do my best to go back through and switch the data. My best guess is that it won't have too much change on the AHA teams, as Quinnipiac was only in the AHA for two seasons (although they were in the MAAC with basically the same teams for five seasons prior to the AHA). The biggest change will be for the ECAC teams that lose all those Yale games.

OK. No big deal. Was just curious. If it's a hassle to change results then don't bother. It's a relatively quick calculation in my decade results, but I don't do measurements vs NCAA champions; it's vs top 10 so there's usually more leeway if one result changes.

Understandable. Mine isn't terribly difficult to change, it would just take awhile. Again, if you remind me when the top 100 tournament is over, I'll see if I have time to do it. Like I said though, I wouldn't anticipate any big changes. The bottom of the bottom AHA teams would likely see some increase in points, but not enough to move past Army. The biggest differences would be from the teams that have played Yale a significant amount of times. For example, Princeton gained around 1.5 points, and that was almost entirely because Yale won, and Princeton has a tremendous history with Yale. Switch the Yale-QU game, and they probably stay very close to where they were last season.

                      A little behind schedule, but...

                      Coming in at #26...

                      Dartmouth - 38.6488 Points

The Big Green had an average season, going 15-14-5 in the ECAC. Dartmouth did add just over 3.25 points to their totals though, thanks largely to Yale's national title. Last season, Dartmouth was ranked #26.

                      Coming in at #27...

                      Colgate - 30.6333 Points

The Raiders struggled in conference play, but finished with an overall record of 14-18-4. Colgate also benefitted from Yale winning the national championship, as the Raiders gained just over 1.5 points on the season despite an unimpressive record. Last season, Colgate was ranked #27.

                      Coming in at #28...

                      Ferris State - 27.8098 Points

The Bulldogs had a mediocre season, going 16-16-5 in the CCHA. Ferris State gained 0.43 points this season. Last season, Ferris State was ranked #28.

                      Coming in at #29...

                      Northeastern - 25.7628 Points

The Huskies struggled in Hockey East this season, finishing last, and only going 9-21-4 overall. However, the Huskies also benefitted slightly from Yale's national title. The Huskies earned nearly 3/4 of a point on the season despite the awful record. Last season, the Huskies were ranked #29.

                      Coming in at #30...

                      Quinnipiac - 23.932 Points

The biggest mover in this year's rankings, the Bobcats had their program's best season ever. QU won the ECAC Regular Season title, earned the #1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, and advanced all the way to the title game. As a result, the Bobcats gained just under 20 points on the season. Last season, Quinnipiac was ranked #44.

                          Coming in at #21...

                          Yale - 72.6486 Points

The Bulldogs followed a strong regular season with an impressive run in the NCAA Tournament to win it all. The program's first national championship boosted the Bulldogs nearly 39 points, more than doubling their program total. This marks the third consecutive year that the national champion earned between 38-39 points. Last season, Yale was ranked #26.

                          Coming in at #22...

                          St. Lawrence - 69.0047 Points

The Saints had a strong season, going 18-16-4, and had 2 Hobey Baker finalists. The decent record and strong individual accomplishments, along with Yale winning the national title, increased St. Lawrence's total by over 4.5 points. Last season, SLU was ranked #21.

                          Coming in at #23...

The Redhawks had a strong campaign, winning the CCHA regular season title and making the NCAA Tournament Regional Finals. As a result, the RedHawks earned nearly 3.25 points this season. Last season, Miami was ranked #22.

                          Coming in at #24...

                          Providence - 39.7872 Points

The Friars went into the last game of the regular season with a chance to win the Hockey East Regular Season championship, but fell short to a strong Lowell squad. Overall, the Friars had a respectable 17-14-7 record. Consequently, the Friars added nearly 2 points to their totals. Last season, Providence was ranked #23.

                          Coming in at #25...

                          Notre Dame - 39.4614 Points

The Irish won the CCHA Playoff title, finished second in the CCHA Regular Season, made an NCAA Tournament, and went 25-13-3. For their season, Notre Dame earned almost 2.25 points to advance ever so close to the Friars from Providence. Last season, Notre Dame was ranked #24.

                          21. Yale - 72.6486 Points
                          22. St. Lawrence - 69.0047 Points

Yeah, there are a few spots where there are big gaps. Although, this certainly isn't the biggest gap between teams. That being said, anything over 5 points is a fairly significant gap within these rankings. Historically (well, at least over the three years where I've kept track), making a Frozen Four will generally earn a team around 8 points, a Runner up finish a bit less than 20, and a national title a bit less than 40. Consequently, it would probably take a Miami title to bridge this particular gap, although a runner-up finish in the right set of circumstances may be enough to push them up to #22.
