Scheduling is delayed because NMU and MTU are finding dates for their series, which will be on Tuesday nights.

AD search is being delayed because of the provost (No. 2 position in the university) search.

Neither of the two are related, besides the waits being really annoying.

Come on Matt, the provost position has nothing to do with Wong's decision on AD. Wong himself told you and your paper that he offered up the name to the board last Friday and hoped to offer the position to the candidate during the weekend. Either, negotiations are taking place or somebody turned down the offer and Les is back at the drawing board.

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University President Les Wong announced today that he has accepted the presidency at San Francisco State University (SFSU) in California. He is scheduled to assume his new post on Aug. 1. Wong has served as NMU’s top administrator since 2004.

During Wong’s tenure, NMU engaged in a broad-based strategic planning process, resulting in the university’s “Road Map to 2015.” The evolving plan focuses on four areas for improvement: innovation, helping students lead meaningful lives, leveraging campus attributes and community engagement. NMU has gained a national reputation for the latter as one of about 300 U.S. higher education institutions to earn the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

NMU also continued its high-tech advancements under Wong by becoming the first university in the country to operate its own WiMAX network. This fourth-generation (4G) technology is capable of transferring data, voice and video at distances far beyond what is available with traditional Wi-Fi. Based largely on this effort, NMU was selected as the site for President Barack Obama to announce his Wireless Innovation and Infrastructure Initiative in February 2011.

Wong oversaw the largest gift in NMU history: a $5 million commitment to enhance the university’s ability to recruit high-achieving students. Other notable achievements included launching a study-abroad program in Cuba, which only 16 U.S. institutions had been licensed to do, and earning Higher Learning Commission accreditation for NMU in 2010 through the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP).

Talk about left field.

This may be the hold up on the AD search, as the new hire may want to know exactly who is in charge when they get here.

Problem is Dr. Wong is no longer in charge of making the decision. I would have trusted his decision without question. The new guy now will make the decision and god only knows how that will turn out. I hope he doesn't go against the recommendation of Dr. Wong's because that could become a serious problem is it doesn't go well.

Do you think he made the decision and moved on? I think it depends on how the board handles this. Wong did have the most contact with the possible hires. So no Pres, no Provost and No AD. Proper choice now can really make for a huge change in direction, question is which direction.

NMU BOARD NAMES HAYNES PRESIDENT

David Haynes has been appointed the 14th president of Northern Michigan University by the NMU Board of Trustees, effective Monday, May 14. He will replace Les Wong, who announced today that he has accepted the presidency at San Francisco State University.

“It is a privilege to have been selected as president by the NMU Board of Trustees and to have the opportunity to serve my alma mater in this capacity,” Haynes said.

Haynes has been professionally affiliated with NMU for 27 years in various capacities. He has served as an adviser to five presidents, special adviser to Wong on public policy and member of the president’s cabinet. Haynes has been an associate professor of political science and public administration for the past six years and directs the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree program. He also is co-director of the NMU Center for Rural Community and Economic Development and chair of the faculty senate graduate programs committee.

In addition to a bachelor’s degree from NMU, Haynes holds a juris doctorate from the Thomas M. Cooley School of Law.

“We are fortunate that we have a plan in place to provide continuity and clear direction to the university,” said Brian Cloyd, chair of the NMU Board of Trustees. “David has a thorough understanding of the current issues facing Northern Michigan University both internally and externally. The board is keenly aware of the importance of moving forward with its top three priorities: a successful resolution of the current employee contracts under negotiation; increasing enrollment and retaining current students; and finalizing a branding and marketing plan to provide additional revenues to the university in order to implement the strategic plan. Additionally, we have directed him to immediately review both the provost and athletic director searches and to make a recommendation to us."

Cloyd said the appointment is for a minimum of two years and Haynes will have full responsibility for successfully implementing the board’s priorities and overseeing all operations of the university.

Since other school threads are posting and commenting on new recruits, I was curious what you guys know about NMU's 2012 recruiting class and the returning roster as a whole.

Who will be new for the Wildcats this coming season, what do you know about them, and who may contribute right away?

Who will step up in the forward positions now that Florek, Cherniwchan, and Gron are gone?

We should have a pretty solid crew of returning defensemen, shouldn't we? (Baker, Epp, Follmer, Handley, Jones, Ludwig, Macauley...)

Will Coreau have a good back up to challenge him?

Anything else?
