He obviously understands the game, but you can easily tell he doesn't watch a second of college hockey until they put him on this assignment.

Right. I guess both points of view are right: 1) He is a goofball, and will confuse entire teams, players, cities, etc. AND 2) he knows the solid basics of the game and has gotten this job announcing not by a fluke.
