Payscale.com has calculated the return on investment for students attending U.S. colleges and universities. Their list excludes scholarship athletes who depart early without a diploma (within a decade). This is unfair! The "Rah-Rah" spirit generated by recruiting probable early departures provides their schools with a notoriety which must increase gate receipts and increase alumni contributions, thus benefiting the return-on-investment of the general student population. Omitting the generous salaries of early, non-graduating athlete departures explains the return-on-investment rankings for most DI schools with hockey programs.

In short he suggests coaches and student athletes should not place much importance on the verbal. Coaches should recruit right up until the student athlete signs a NLI.

Interesting points made. In my opinion committing to young kids is a lot riskier. Wait until they are older and more of a known quantity. Plus the kid will have a better idea of what he is committing to. Almost like shifting from drafting talent to free agency.

Is there currently any discussion of creating a sort of college hockey webcast all-access pass which would enable a buyer to view every team's internet game webcasts? It seems nearly every program now webcasts its home games live but unfortunately different schools webcast through different services (e.g., CBS, AmericaOne, UStream) which typically charge moderate per-game or high per-team/season fees. If I could through a single, one-time purchase gain access to all college hockey webcasts, I would buy that package instead of NHL Center Ice (assuming a similar price) and suspect many others would too. Obviously it'd be a win for the fans but I think it could also benefit the programs by supplying each game with far more viewers to sell to advertisers. Note I understand many schools likely already have contracts with the services through which they webcast games and I'm not suggesting they break those and move to a common platform; I'm suggesting a single fee for a single set of credentials to access all the various services. I think if College Hockey Inc. could accomplish this it'd enhance the organization's stature infinitely. If a conference were able to do it I'd consider buying (depending on the conference and the price). The status quo is a mess and a wasted opportunity

The routine denials from Babcock, but an interesting tidbit in the days prior to the coach's convention in Florida next week. This season Babcock has been taking some heat and there are changes coming to Detroit's front office as Jim Nill will be the next GM in Dallas taking over for Joe Nieuwendyk. It's probably nothing, but HNIC doesn't general float wild speculation.

Several years ago in an effort to stop players from embellishing college hockey added a
rule to penalize players from this practice. But somewhere along the way Hockey East
refs(maybe all refs I only call what I see) made the rule actually increase the practice.

Several years ago in an effort to stop players from embellishing college hockey added a
rule to penalize players from this practice. But somewhere along the way Hockey East
refs(maybe all refs I only call what I see) made the rule actually increase the practice.

Here is the problem......

There are 3 things that can result from a player when he tries to flop, dive etc.

1. The refs call a penalty on the other team(dive successfull)
2. The refs call matching calls on both players ex. hook and a dive(dive a draw)
3. The refs call a dive only (dive unsuccesfull)

The problem as I have observed over the last few years is the HE Refs only call #1 & #2 and
never #3. The refs mostly take the cop-out call #2 which usually angers both teams and solves
nothing.

If you are a player and the only 2 results of a dive are you getting a powerplay or the ref calling
a matching why would you not want to dive? You wouldnt because the WORST you get out of the
deal is a draw. It s NO LOSE GAMBLE!!!

I watched over 40 college games this year and only saw 1 dive only call. HE needs
to make the refs make a dive only call for the rule to have any power.
