I have quite a bit of interest in firearms, both new and antiques, and I'm hoping to have a place to discuss potential purchases, ammunition, performance, etc. I do not want this thread to turn into a ****ing match over "gun control", that is absolutely not what I intended, if this thread turns into that, I will delete it and go elsewhere for this discussion.

To start, I have mentioned this elsewhere, but I will repost here. I came across a very interesting gun in an online estate auction yesterday, and I ended up buying it. The listing said that this gun was a "Esterr.WAFFFB.GES Model 71 Bolt Action". Before I bought it, I had a pretty good idea that it was some form of a German Mauser, from 1871, though, it wasn't like anything I had found online up until that point.

I did some more digging, and found out that this is in fact a Mauser, manufactured by an Austrian armory, that went by the name Oesterr.Wafffb.Ges. which is an abbreviation for 3 very long German sounding words. That same company is now the company that we know as Steyr Arms. The stock was still not right for the Model 71, even though I could see in pictures that "Mod. 71" was stamped right in the steel on the receiver. More digging, and I found that this is most likely a "Sporterized" Model 71 military rifle. Meaning that after it was decommissioned from the whichever military it was used in (presumably whatever incarnation of Austria was around at that time), it was converted into a "Sporter" which was then sold to the public to use for hunting and other sport. Even after finding this out, something wasn't right, the sights still weren't right.

Late morning I went to pick this thing up from the auction house, and much to my surprise, my Mauser rifle is actually a shotgun. None of the pictures posted showed any indication of this, except for the sights, which now made sense. I did some more digging, to figure out how a Mauser Model 71 military rifle can turn into a shotgun. I found that there were some of these, possibly many, that were converted to shotguns, again for sport use. Apparently many were shipped to Australia. But, I still haven't found any of the Model 71's that were converted to shotguns online, they were almost all the later model rifles from the 1880's and 1890's that were converted. So I'm thinking that the model 71 is pretty rare. Also, this appears to be a .20 gauge, whereas almost all the information I found said that they were converted to .16 gauges and .12 gauges, with .20 gauges being quite rare.

Overall, the gun is in great shape. The wood looks really good, and the metal has a nice patina, that hasn't been messed with. I think I got a pretty good deal for the price I paid for this thing.

I still have some more digging do, though! I will post some pictures this weekend, when I get some time.

Hey our choral group's doing Bach's "O Jesu Christ mein's Lebens Licht" and I think our tonal color is rounding into shape. I'm thinking of asking herr Maestro if we can call our show "Bach Joy"

Me: Lettuce call it "Bach Joy"
Maestro: I like the title, but I won't leek that yet.

Although no one really "knows" on what day the world's greatest playwright was born, April 26, 1564 is often celebrated as his birthday because that's the date that is reported as the day he was baptized, and since infant mortality was so high back then, many babies were baptized on the day they were born to make sure that they were baptized at all. Some people like to say he was botrn on April 23 because he died on April 23, 1616 and they like the symmetry that would bring.

There's an apocryphal story about an anti-intellectual who sniffed, "I don't understand why there is so much fuss about Shakespeare: all he did was take a bunch of famous quotes and string them together."

So many of his plays have been performed so well by so many of the world's best actors; the stories have been recast into many different settings and have produced hit after hit after hit through the centuries that followed.

Some people are surprised at how many great movies and shows have derived from his plays.

and then on top of all those great dramas and great comedies, we have all those sonnets as well?

Happy Birthday!

There's some noise about trading Mallett to pick up a pick too, but I doubt that happens.
