Welcome college hockey fans to the opening round of the inaugural, soon-to-be-annual USCHO College Hockey Jeopardy tournament!!
This event is brought to you by your friends at WIS Productions of Newfields NH, with the assistance of countless volunteers without whose help this idea would have never stood a chance at getting off the ground.
A Brief History
The inspiration for this tournament lies in an experiment we tried two years ago here on the old USCHO message boards. Organizing a game between the 3 Boston-based "Beanpot" schools - BC, BU and Northeastern - we ran a game over the course of a full week, based as closely as possible to the Jeopardy game format as seen for years on TV, except using categories based on Hockey East-related topics. The game was called "Hockey East Jeopardy", and after a hard-fought battle, Team BU emerged as the Hockey East champion.
The Dream of a National Tourney
In the aftermath of HE Jeopardy in '99, we tried to piece together an approach for a national tourney at USCHO. Unfortunately, due to a number of limitations and outside factors, it was just not meant to be at that time. The concept was put on hold until we had more favorable conditions to work with. Hopefully that time is now ...
What We're Going To Do This Year
The plan is to play three (3) first-round games involving three (3) teams each from the major D-1 conferences - the CCHA, the WCHA, and Hockey East. The winners of each of these first-round games will eventually meet in the College Hockey Jeopardy Finals, with the winners being crowned as National College Hockey Jeopardy champions!! http://www.uscho.com/board/ubb/smile.gif
How the Teams Were Selected
In Hockey East, the defending HE Jeopardy champions Team BU were invited back in order to defend their '99 title. Since BC and NU participated last time around, we excluded them this time around to give two new teams a chance. After soliciting for interest in this year's game, teams from Merrimack and UNH eventually stepped up to the challenge. It is hoped that IF there is a "next time", other schools may try to field a team to challenge this year's champions!
We are also thrilled to point out that the WCHA Jeopardy game is pretty much filled out with teams and rosters finalized. Although progress with CCHA Jeopardy has been slower to develop, it is anticipated that we should fill out those teams shortly. If you would have interest in participating, please respond to the "Coming Soon" thread here in the USCHO Community forums! http://www.uscho.com/board/ubb/biggrin.gif
What the Future Holds?
My sincerest apologies to those fans whose D-1 teams are in either the ECAC, the MAAC or CHA. In a perfect world, we'd have the time and resources to get your conferences in on the fun. It's our hope that in the future, we may be able to expand this tourney so as to include your teams and conferences, too.
A Plea For Sanity
It's taken a lot of work to get this idea to the point where we are now. The idea is to have fun, while fostering some competition of a friendly nature between folks who have adverse rooting interests on the ice during the regular season. I realize this can lead to flames and conflicts at times, but in the interests of having a fair, playable game, I'd ask any non-players to please refrain from jumping into the Game Threads while the game is in play. Thanks! http://www.uscho.com/board/ubb/smile.gif

Having said that, all of the preliminaries are almost complete. Here are the six (6) Hockey East Jeopardy categories, each of which will contain five (5) semi-related questions, with point values ranging from 10 pts. to 50 pts. at 10 pt. intervals:
Fables, Fairy Tales & Flamewars!!!
The ECAC
Hockey Downeast
The Show
Prehistoric Hockey East
For The Record
As mentioned earlier in game preparations, I will run a test question tomorrow at midday to give the players a chance to see how the "warning message" and answering will be handled during the actual game. Once that's done, I will wait for Team BU to select the first question from one of the categories listed above. Projected first question to be posted to this thread at approx. 9:00 a.m. EST on Tuesday, May 22, 2001.
Good luck to all the teams and players, and may the best team win!!!
It's finally game time!!!
