Maybe you could get the Schenectady site to agree to flood over the turf. I for one would think that green ice would be a nice touch.

So nominating the Fargo Coliseum is out of the question because it is a western venue? Too bad. It has a "Futile Four" type backgroud.

Home to USHL IceSharks: moved to Chicago.
Home to NDSU club hockey: folded.

Maybe they could just flood the ends. It would make up for any suspect defenses.

From what I've read, in the early years of UAF hockey, they would play their games on the Chena River outdoors. How about doing something like that...you know kinda like old fashioned pond hockey, only on a river.

I nominate the Chena River as the site for the Futile Four.

If the committee doesn't like that, they could always do something the NCAA won't do...have the tournament in Canada at the old Montreal Forum...I hear it's pretty run down now.

If that's not futile enough for the futile four, you could have it at either the Merrimack arena (believe me, that's a pretty futile arena), or at the old Tully Forum (where Lowell used to play).

I still say the Nassau County Coliseum, in Uniondale, Long Island, New York. It's the home of the Islanders, which means there's been some pretty BAD hockey played there for several years now.

Ever been to Meehan Auditorium at Brown?
Although, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to give a strong FF candidate a chance at home ice?

I agree with the NY State Fair Coliseum. Anything that can take our mind off the Syracuse War Memorial is a plus.

I'd be honored to have it at the Dee. My high school played in an invite there every other year!

I nominate Telfar Park in Beloit, WI to host the Bottom Ten Futile 4. It's outdoors. Enough said.

Next year, have it at The Dee. I can't believe Tech used to play in that steel barn before MacInnes was built. When skating in there I can still feel the snowin' and the blowin' from outside!

I'd second The Dee in beautiful downtown Houghton, Michigan.

Go Tech!

I think Providence would be a wonderful site for the Futile Four. However, the arena at that other college across town would be a more suitable site, as the coffin-like architecture and atmosphere is very appropriate.

In fact, I nominate Providence College's Schneider Coffin - er, Arena - as the permanent host of the Futile Four.

Hey ScottK, I have one better for you. Forget the Coliseum; there's a converted old airplane hanger right next to there in Mitchell Field. It's about 30 degrees in there so the ice doesn't melt, and the only heat in the place are four lamps which hover above the 200 seats or so. Can't say anything about the facilities, but it's a definite contender for the Futile Four site.

*Re: ""Welcome to the Frozen turf of the Schenectady City Center......" Actually, if they flood over the turf, they could bill it as the "frozen tundra", and maybe some Cheeseheads will wander over from Albany thinking they're in Green Bay. Definite attendance boost, cuz, after all, it's not a legitimate college hockey event unless there are Cheeseheads in the house...

Here's another vote for Schenectady, it allows for those going to see the Final Four, to check out the Futile Four too.

On the toher hand, I don't see how the committee picked the 4th place team in the ECAC (Union) over the 2nd (Colgate) and 3rd (Vermont) place teams. Its an outrage I tell you! I believe this is a prime example of the committee favoring big name teams.

If the tourney's going to be out east this year, here's a suggestion for next year's tourney: Caine's (Kayne's? Kaine's?, I'm not sure about the correct spelling) Rink in Sault Ste. Marie. I've heard its been renovated since my youth, but when I played hockey there it snowed inside the place because the windows were broken.
Also, between periods, the players can keep warm by digging out the shovels and scrapers so they can re-surface the ice.

If they replaced the ice with turf I guess the players will just have to run around in their socks. Hey - it is not the selection committee's fault.

I would like to caution MAAC teams about getting too excited at having 5 teams in the tourney, as it in no way guarantees you'll have more than 1 WCH...i mean MAAC team in the ff.

Nothin like having a hockey game in a the capital district. The thing about Schenectady is that not only is the rink perfect but so is the town. Another one of those formerly prosperous now troubled central NY towns. I will have to make plans to stay at a friends house for the games there!

The NYS Fairgrounds are really in Solvay, a filthy disgusting town made up completely of factories it seems, near the shores of the disgusting Onondaga Lake. The lake is so polluted that people aren't allowed to swim in it. They found medical waste on the shores, filthy hypodermic needles and whatnot. Fairgrounds!!!

I second (third? fourth?) the motion of the NY State Fairgrounds.

Whoever mentioned the War Memorial is wrong -- that place is way too classy for the Futile Four. If I had to pick a site for next year's tournament, I would pick the Optimist Arena in Jackson Michigan. The scoreboard works, half the time, the drop from the bench door onto the ice is just slightly less than 2 feet, the glass is in such bad shape that they have big stickers on it saying "Please do not shoot at glass", and the scorekeeper gets half the stats wrong, because they're not at ice level, so the ref can't tell them the information. Plus, they drop the scoresheet clipboard down on a rope after the game, and it usually manages to hit a visiting player on the head.
