  • Could Plattsburgh and Oswego join the ECAC West?

I am just curious if Plattsbugh and Oswego the most storied programs in the SUNYAC would ever help the ECAC West out and join it so they could play get the AQ and play 12 ECAC West Conference games and then could play each SUNYAC team once to continue the state rivalries, and continue to play in a couple of tournaments to fill out their schedules.

There might be sufficient incentives for Buffalo & Fredonia joining the ECAC-West (starting with travel), particularliy after Canton goes to NCAA DIII, that IMO is the best hope for them (the ECAC-West).

Re: Could Plattsburgh and Oswego join the ECAC West?

To my knowledge, if you are a SUNYAC school you are expected to play in the SUNYAC for any sport which your school fields a team and the conference sponsors a league. So what you are describing is very unlikely, since those schools would need to withdraw from the SUNYAC in every other sport as well.

        What's in it for them?
        Absolutely nothing.

no, unfortunately they are both in the SUNY schools which are all controlled by the state, its a bureaucratic nightmare anything government run is hard if not impossible to change. The people in charge wouldn't let them leave as it would lower the legitimacy of the rest of the SUNY system if the athletic confrence were to shrink.

While it wouldn't take the ECAC-West to an autobid, SUNYIT (located in Utica, NY, a SUNY school that left the SUNYAC), in September 2010, began the next planning stages for their "Facilities Master Plan" in keeping with their 2001 Capital Plan. A hockey rink is among the serious considerations, and I believe land has been set aside to allow future construction.
Among their planning strategists, is JMZ , M/E Engineering and MGT Planning Experience, who have assisted among others, SUNY Canton, Plattsburgh, Cortland, Morrisville, Skidmore, RPI and Castleton.

Unfortunately, it was not included in their currently being constructed $20 million field house.

Re: Could Plattsburgh and Oswego join the ECAC West?

Please, if anyone can correct me on this please do so, but I beleive that Oswego was part of the ECAC in the 70-80's. This may before the SUNYAC conference was made. Like many here I can't see Oswego and Plattsburgh joining the ECAC West. For many reasons like the travel for Plattsburgh, Plattsburgh just about owning the AC bid from the SUNYAC, plus like it has been said the governoring body wouldn't alow it. Also would the ECAC West really want to add 2 more power house programs in an already very strong conference and would there be anything left of the teams at the end year since they would just beat each other up.

Re: Could Plattsburgh and Oswego join the ECAC West?

There's a reason they left the ECAC-West in the first place! What is it? Well, it's beacuse they're in the SUNYAC. Once the SUNYAC had enough teams to warrant an autobid, they began officially sponsoring Men's Ice Hockey. As members of the SUNYAC, each school is required to participate in the SUNYAC conference if the conference sponsors that sport. This isn't the Big East, wher Notre Dame is allowed to participate in all sport except football

So no, they will not. Unfortunately, I also anticipate that Canton will join the SUNYAC at least in hockey, if not in all sports (and it seems doubtful that they will join in all sports). As has been discussed before, perhaps the best option for the ECAC West, given the refusal of the other ECAC conferences to reorganize in order to help,is to collectively apply for associate membership in the SUNYAC for Men's Ice Hockey only (which would create the interesting situation where these schools exist as the SUNYAC in Men's Hockey, and as the ECAC-W in women's ice hockey). But that possibility hinges on the SUNYAC's willingness to take them (morrisville would get a vote, but so would Oneonta and New Paltz).

Well, RIT has already stated that the paperwork to move women's hockey (if not the whole athletic program) will be ready to submit the day the moratorium ends, so that might not be a problem

RIT plans to move its women’s hockey program to the Division I level as soon as the NCAA lifts a moratorium on such moves. Destler has advocated a move of the whole athletic department to D-I at a future date.
