Some club teams do get a small amount of funding from their schools, to supplement the pay-to-play money. Syracuse, for example, gets roughly $1000 each year (Not sure of the exact amount). UM gives it's club team money, EMU and Penn State both get a little bit of money. Those are just examples that I can think of off the top of my head.

As long as we *are* continuing to debate the question, Eric, here is a link that states the Kent University club hockey team receives no support from the University:

The article contradicts itself. In one paragraph, it says the team recieves no money from the university, in the next, it says that Rec. Services gives the team money.

According to Wilks, Recreational Services provides only $6,000 a year to help with costs.

Not worth any more argument. It was a poorly written question, and the results are inconclusive. Jen tossed the points for that question, so I think we should stop worrying about it.

Darn it!!
I read the text wrong.

It's Dan Boyle...
(UNH and Miami fans- I beg your forgiveness...)
And yes, time has elapsed.

Correct answer is Dan Boyle in 1998. Gotta ask Annette...how did you confuse Miami and UNH? (-:

Anywho...

Team Screw_bill - 50 pts
Team BK - 30 pts
Team SLU - -90 pts

I'm not sure what to think about Team Screw-bill's 'Don't Answer to Win' strategy...

Team BK still retains control of the board.

Everyone remember to post to this thread once the board gets back up so we'll know when we can proceed. I've printed a hard copy of the thread in case something happens to it during the transition.

Have fun working tomorrow everybody )-:

Ugh!
It's what I get for being in a hurry...
The text read:
Other finalists were Michigan State forward Mike York, Michigan forward Bill
Muckalt, New Hampshire forwards Jason Krog and Mark Mowers, Miami of
Ohio defenseman Dan Boyle, Yale defenseman Ray Giroux, RPI forward Eric
Healey and North Dakota defenseman Curtis Murphy.

I saw "Mowers, Miami of" and... well, there you go!

Three Blind Mice for 40 pts please.

Why should that question get thrown out? Team SLU got the correct answer. You didn't realize their were two answers to the question. Would it have been better for me to answer with both when you were clearly asking for one?? Sorry, but we should get the ten points. I don't care about control of the board. Team SLU sould not be pen. for your error.

I'm going to be a little defensive here, because I was the one who wrote the question that's being contested. The exact wording was "Which CCHA school completely dropped it's hockey program in the 1990's?" Maybe the wording was slightly ambigious. I apologize for that. However, I thought that the word completely would imply "no club team, nothing at all" Yes, I did know when I had written the question that Kent State did still have a club team. After the question was debated, Alton posted a link that said the Kent State team still recieves (some but not much) money from the school, therefore, the program has not been "completely dropped" Team SLU gets no points, because they did not answer the question correctly. Team SLU was not penalized for the incorrect answer, because after "checking with the judges" it was ruled that the question was ambigious enough to cause doubt. Rather than complaining, just be happy that our MC is benevolent. http://www.uscho.com/board/ubb/smile.gif

This post serves as my public, official apology for the wording of this question, and resulting confusion. While I hope this explanation clears up some of the confusion, I will still accept all blame on this particular issue.

Between the Pipes---10pts:

Who is the only CCHA goalie to win the Hobey Baker Award?

By that definition, Intramural hockey also counts as a "hockey program". I didn't check to see if UIC has that or not.

Anyway, for those of you interested in the Kent University situation, here is a posting of the CCHA News Release from April 13, 1994, when Kent University dropped hockey. It's interesting reading.
http://lists.maine.edu/cgi/wa?A2=ind9404&L=Hockey-L&P=R17509

Apparently, the CCHA Commissioner, Bill Beagan, heard about the decision from the media, and Kent University's President would not return his phone calls. A real mess...

A comment from an unbiased bystander. When I read the question, I instantaneously thought both UIC and Kent State. My second thought was that the answer had to be unique. As opposed to thinking about which has a club program (which I agree with Spaceman shouldn't count), I started wondering if either of them still had a franchise in the CCHA which wasn't active, as happens in pro leagues and also in Major Junior.

The question was just no good and IMHO should have been caught by most anyone.

PS. Why the ECAC always have to rely on SLU to hold up their honor? http://www.uscho.com/board/ubb/wink.gif

According to http://www.uic.edu:80/depts/chcc/rec/IMSports/IMPolicies.html they don't.

I think we're going to need to wait until after the server is moved to resume the game. Otherwise there's too many chances for something to go wrong (people getting shut out of a question, etc).

I guess we're still in a holding pattern. Stay tuned.

As to the disputed question:

We were not in error on that one---we had even verified that UIC did not have intra-mural hockey. We were looking for 'no hockey, no how' hence our reliance on the word "completely". The problem became the definition of "program". Difference of opinion, bad question, over and done with; otherwise we'll be here forever delaying the game with examples and citations of when club and intra-mural were or were not referred to as programs. You can discuss (Alton's link was interesting---thanks), but the question is out.

Also, if a question should arise in the future in the form of "Name X teams that..." it means "Name X teams". Not "the X teams", as there may be more than X teams. Fair enough?
