It was suggested that Salve start their own thread. Good idea!

Haven't seen any changes to the Committment roster since March 17th. Salve has 3 forwards and one goalie on the list. I heard that one of the forwards broke her ankle. wonder how she is doing. Salve's roster is way down since they are losing four players. One of them is a graduating senior. the other 3 quit. I am hearing now that it has to do with the coach.
Salve also needs to beef up their defense. Only had 4 d last year and had to use a forward to make 5.

You know, all this speculation and conjecture is making my head hurt.

Oswald killed Kennedy and there was no one on the grassy knoll.

I've met the SRU coach and found him to be an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, concerned and active coach. Some people may not appreciate his enthusiasm, but he always gives his all. He brought the team from perpetual bottom dweller to the second round of the ECAC East playoffs. I don't think that that's too shabby a record. Maybe the 4 that left the team were more comfortable with the 0 for years and didn't like success? We'll quite honestly never know, but I'm tired of the unsubstantiated innuendo.

Present some facts or get a life...

but facts aren't as much fun as speculation and gossip...:D...besides who really cares about what any of us say here...nobody in the real hockey world pays any attention to what is said in here so if you don't like what is said in here i suggest you just don't bother coming here to read it anymore...there i've fixed your poor hurting head

This is their first winning season and the players that played a big part of the winning season and getting to the semifinals are gone.
The 3 players that quit had almost 70 points between them.
Add that to the points that their senior scored and it's close to 100 points.
Looks to me like they are going backwards instead of forward.

I would also like to know what's going on at Salve. I recommended the school and the program to a family friend, an outstanding D, a national development program player who had been scouted by DI teams until a serious knee injury. Still not 100%, but she would contribute greatly to any DIII program next winter. She has not made a final decision yet, and I would hate to see her commit to Salve if the program is swirling down the toilet.

My daughter played against their freshman top goal scorer back in her Charles River and Boston Latin days, and went to hockey camp with her. That young lady lived and breathed hockey. Can't believe she would just walk away from hockey. I'll hear her version one of these days.

The coach was helping at Northeastern in 2002 and BC in 2006 when both programs were in turmoil, and players and coaches departed. I heard a lot of detail about the problems at both schools at the time, and never heard this coach's name mentioned as a problem at all. I wouldn't have recommended him and his program otherwise. I've met the coach and was always impressed by him, both personally and professionally. I'm mystified.

From what I've heard, from a former player and a current college coach, the head coach is rather abrasive. Has succeeded with the team, but there always appear to be lots of new recruits coming in. Team plays in a wonderful rink, but it is not their rink. Put it all together, and it is not a surprise when players decide they have had enough.

Yankeezulu - The team needs some more defenseman. Maybe your friend's daughter should talk to some kids on the team.
The coach is a very good x's and o's person and deserves some credit for the team's success because he recruited these girls in the first place, but in the end it was the players who were responsible for the success of the team this year and the fact is 3 of them have quit. Whether or not new recruits will fill their shoes remains to be seen. As I said before, it looks like we are starting from scratch again.
College hockey is rigorous but these girls have been playing all of their lives and endured the rigors of playing and balancing schoolwork.
The difference to me seems to be the element of fun.
Some people do not respond to negative criticism and constant pressure. There needs to be some mutual respect and some positive feedback and some fun once in a while otherwise it just isn't worth it.

Are the players looking to transfer to a different school or are they going to give up hockey altogether? It would be a shame if it were the latter. There are programs out there that win and still keep it fun and maybe they should look into that avenue. I was at Norwich and know some of the staff there and I saw them play a couple times this season and know they were successful and I bet if you spoke with players on that team they would tell you that they learned a lot, were expected to win ,but that they had a good time doing it so you can have it both ways I think. Maybe they should pursue the transfer avenue????

Let's see, you're suggesting that this group leave the cliff walk, the beach, and the mansions in the resort town of Newport RI for the wilderness and winters of Northfield VT? Boy, that would be a tough decision for me....(remember to pack the compass and the snow shoes???)

Thanks wihobserver for fixing my head, guess I was a little grumpy that day...

No, I was using Norwich as an example of a program that seems to be able to mix the success and fun ends together. Norwich is a hard sell, but I just think that it is a shame to quit playing a game that you love because you do not like the coach. Do not make your next 3 years at school miserable because you want to play the sport that you love but you will not play for a certain coach. I was simply stating that you can find both, a school that you enjoy and a team that you can enjoy playing on.

I think that we seem to be talking about things we don't know. We are doing the players and the coach a disservice by speculating on why these players are not returning. Maybe we should wait to here from someone involved.

I agree with hockeyfan1. what ever reason these young ladies have for leaving the Salve program is just that...THEIR REASON. They made the decision based on things we know nothing about and maybe it is just better left that way. I am sure the decision, whether it be to transfer, take a year off or quit the program, was not an easy one for them to make nor was it made hastily. I don't know any of them nor do I know anything about that program but I hope they have the support of their families and their teammates. They have mine!

Respectfully, Icemom, I think the purpose of this kind of forum is to discuss these issues. I wish the players all the best as well, and I'm sure they had their reasons for leaving. But that's not the end of it. The fact is that there appear to be a very high number of people coming and going from this program. I'm interested in hearing what people have to say about that topic. If this is not to your liking, I understand that. But no one is forcing anyone to read this. It's a discussion forum for people who care to discuss it. I don't think it's wrong to wonder about the reasons for high turnover in a successful college program, and there are plenty of people who may be wondering why that occurred. This kind of discussion happens all the time in other, higher profile sports (such as college football, basktball, etc.), and frequently in a far more personal and critical manner. I hope we can agree to disagree.

I think you are missing the point. What Icemom and I are saying is that we are hearing all kinds of speculation as to why these players have left, not necessarily from anyone that knows them or the team. In fairness and respect to the remaining players and coaches we should wait until someone that KNOWS why they left tells us about it. On this forum you get all kinds of opinions, however I can tell you from firsthand knowlege when it comes to internal team issues these posts can be way out of line. In all honesty, listening to posts on these matters would be like letting your landscaper run your 401k.

and i think you're missing the point because you're giving your opinion and telling us that none of us should be giving our opinions (a double standard at best) unless there are facts to back them up...are you in charge of freedom of speech...it's all just simple speculation and idle discussion and there are no set rules about whether or not any of us are allowed to post our opinions with or without any verifiable facts so just relax...i'm sure the coach and players do know the issues better than any of us and i'm sure they don't care about what any of us have to say on the topic if they even read this gossip column...i'm sure they all have a lot more important things to do with their own lives than to waste time reading or caring about what is said in here...so listen or don't listen...it's up to you...nobody here cares if you choose to listen or not...that's a choice you can make without us telling you that you have to...we don't make rules for you on how or when to post an opinion so don't try to impose a set of rules that you think the rest of us should follow...the nature of free speech is that not everyone agrees with everyone else and that causes great and sometimes controversial conversation...such is life and we all have to deal with it including you

That recruit is doing fine. She had hoped to play in Nationals this week, but I don't think she's been cleard to play just yet. Should be no issues by the the time she joins the team. She is very excited about joining this program. Hopefully all the new recruits feel the same way. Sometimes a change in scenery or a step away from the program by some is good for all.

I don't think my landscaper can do any worse with my 401(k) than I have!!

but I do agree with the rest of your post. People shouldn't talk about why girls left if they don't know why they left. To do so gives everyone the impression that there is a problem with the coach or the program. If there is, so be it. But until someone with factual knowledge speaks out, the speculation does more harm than good.

Mel Sherlock did play at least one shift during Nationals with the Colorado Select. She was obviously tentative, but in speaking with her mom, she's feeling well and expects to be at full strength prior to reporting to Salve. I wish her and the rest of the team the best of luck next season!
