Tell us about the happenings, selection process, and or players in your district leading up to and throughout the USA Hockey national camps for summer 2009.

For the Minnesota district, the coaches nominations and subsequent list of players entering the evaluation process...and the release from the Minnesota Hockey website. Good luck to all.

USA Hockey Girls Advanced 15, 16 & 17 - formerly known as the Girls National Development Camp Program - This program has changed from previous years and will use single year age groups. This programs identifies and helps develop the elite 15, 16 and 17 year old female hockey players in Minnesota. Players are nominated through their HS or youth coaches. Minnesota Hockey Development Camp Festivals are held in late-March. Candidates at this festival are evaluated for selection to USA Hockey national camps. National camps are held in July and August at various sites around the country.

Hope this is all accurate. I spent a little time with research...not a lot.

Rocky Mountain District selections in progress. Texas has completed, Colorado this weekend (weather permitting, we're getting blizzard-like conditions) and Arizona is April 6-11. There are typically some girls attending from the remaining states in the district, but these 3 usually provide the highest number of and highest quality players. (Texas includes Oklahoma in their tryouts, I believe)

77-22

Mass Hockey does an open tryout, anyone can sign up. 1 session doing skills with coaches on the ice for about 80 minutes. Evaluators then rank the girls and select them for the Festival. Festival will consist of two games at which the evaluators will go to work and select the girls for the number of slots available for each age group.

These girls then will then get invited to the NDC for thier age group and a list of alternates will be posted as well.

Festival is scheduled for April 18 and 19th, the skill session was this past weekend.

New York had their District Camps a few weeks ago and the girls where notified. Is there a list posted as to who made it or is that info private? Also is there ever a list of the girls that actually go to the camp. I know they say they rank the girls, but I guess these rankings are private - but how about the top ranked girls?

Congratulations to you daughter it is a great experience and she will meet some great new hockey friends from across the country.

Most USA Hockey Districts will post there selections on their website. There are usually put together and find there way to this forum or others. Last year at the end of the U16 & U15 camp in Rochester they had an Allstar Game in theory those were the top 36 girls out of the 208 or so that were there. This year the U17 & U16 camps will be at the same time in St. Cloud end of June and the U15 & U14 camps will be at the same time in Rochester. They might do an All Star game at the end of these camps again which would offer some indication. Players do have an intereview during the camps and are given some sense of where they fit by their position.

An important point to keep in mind is this is not the top 102 kids in the country - it is the top players in their district based on the quota given by USA Hockey to that district - so some very good players from some very high (Minnesota, Michigan, Mass..) or low hockey population (Ohio, Rocky Mountain, Southeast...) areas don't get to go. I was amazed watching the last two years to see some incredible hockey players from Florida and Nevada - who knew.

We have the U17 & U16 Phase III tryouts going on in Minnesota this weekend. It was fun to see Ben Smith walking about and watching/scoring practices last night. There are 54 girls trying out at U17 they were told 4 D out of 18 D and 5 F out of 30 trying out and 1 G out of 6 will be selected - there is a ton of talent and from this group 7 D, 12 F and 1 G went last year at the U16.

I think its great the way you americans break down the age groups to scout . You look at the better girls more then once if I have an idea of the process. District to region then to National . The open tryout is great I would think for those players living away from the larger centers. In my area if your team makes provincials you might get looked at and even then good chance there is no scouts there. Only one team you're trying out for and that's u18 and there are no open tryouts. Some provinces are starting to do the younger camps. Maybe that's a good reason why Canada seems to be falling behind based on last international results. Is the u22 the only winning group lately ? Girls who compete mostly american universities?

Yeah, each of the 12 districts does it differently, but all the tryouts are open, at least initially. Some have "callback" weekends and then other districts just have one weekend where they do drills, scrimmages, goalie sessions etc. Mid Am District, which is 5 states (PA, OH, KY, WV and IN) is this weekend. The girls selected will be posted on their website Monday.

MidAm update:

Heard that the girls are being notified by email today and that the results will be posted tomorrow, except for 92/93 goalies.

It's my understanding that USAH has changed the U16 and U17 selection process for goalies this year. Historically, the districts have had a fixed number of slots (like F&D do) for goalies. This year the districts will send in their evaluations for goalies to USAH and they will choose the goalies based on some national rank criteria. Goalies will be notified in June when all district camps have concluded. U14 & U15 goalie selection will remain at the district level.

Does anyone have any other insight to this process?

So last year in MN at the U17 level they took 5 D and 8 F in the selection process plus 1 D and 2 F were added At Large. This year the number was announced on Friday at the beginning of Phase III to be only 4 D and 5 F for U17.

When I asked a few people in the know they said:

1) This was to shift more "At Large" selections to USA Hockey and take some of the decision process out of the local Districts. In one way this may help the number of girls picked from MN but since MN doesn't send girls to the U14 Camp nor do MN girls get to compete in the National Tournaments (Shattuck represents MN at U16 and plays the MN Thoroughbreds to see who represents MN at Nationals) USA Hockey will know more and possibly favor more heavily girls outside of MN.

2) The other theory was since MN only placed one girl on the U18 a year ago was the quota had been lowered.

Time will tell for MN - 3200 girls play HS hockey in MN, 31 D1 recruits signed this year out of the class of 2009 and a better class coming perhaps in 2010 so we will see.

Did other Districts see their Quota Changed or Lowered also?

As I understand it...(as a first time parent of an NDC kid)

At the national camp each girl receives a grade of A, B, or C. "A" being kids of nation team potential. Districts are rewarded so to speak for sending more "A" type players to camp with more slots the following year.

The girls are also getting evaluated each time they hit the ice at a district camp or festival. These scores come into play during the selections for at large spots at NDC.

:) This is all rink talk so if I have given information that is not accurate I am sure one of you fine people will educate us.

Is it hockey season yet? I'm bored.....

To GC2... Unless you know something the rest of us residing in the Central District don't... your list is both incomplete and premature. The Central camp is to be held in Delafield, Wi April 25 for 95,94 birth years and April 26 for 93, 92 birth years. Your list looks like it came from the Illinois (AHAI) list of girls selected to attend the Central Camp. I imagine the numbers are pretty close but I don't think all girls will come out of Illinois

The Central District tryouts are this coming weekend (95's & 94's on Saturday and 93's & 92's on Sunday). That being said, I'm not sure where you found the names of those that will represent the Central District at the NDP. These names appear to be those that have been invited to these tryouts from the Illinois affiliate.

Whoops, 2inNet beat me to the correction...:)
