Just some stats:

UMD has the statistical advantage in goal by either GAA or SV %

UMD has the statistical advantage in scoring offense (3.92 v 3.41) and scoring defense (1.73 v 2.12)

Of course the home ice appears to be a huge advantage for UNH. (Maybe someone else out there has a stat. analysis on that!) On the other hand, UMD has actually played better on the road than at home!!

Other than that, the teams appear to be almost evenly matched. UNH has a slight advantage in PP but not in PK.

It would appear that if UMD can stifle Jenn Wakefield they have a great, great chance of winning the game.

Wakefield has a sprained ankle, so who knows if she will play? I for one am willing to bet she'll want to grind it out and play. If she does, it could still have an affect, though.

On the other hand, UMD has actually played better on the road than at home!!One caveat might be that they didn't win in Madison, and they didn't win in St. Cloud. Not 100% sure about Niagara, but I'm guessing those were their only 4 games on big ice.

I've just been informed that there will be a free broadcast of the game by Pack Network on UNH wildcats.tv.com

The site presently implies that there is a fee to be paid...time will tell.

they won't be able to stifle her as much as her ankle did, keeping her out of the lineup for both games this past weekend. UNH managed two 2-1 victories with 13 skaters.
Hopefully, though, she will be able to give it a go Saturday.
UNH will have to ride their emotion, and hopefully atmosphere of a good crowd, and the home ice advantage and get a couple of early goals like they have recently, and hang on...

Defense and goaltending have been very good for UNH of late, and that's what its going to take to win this one.
Who will start in net for UNH?

UNH managed two 2-1 victories with 13 skaters.Did they skate 3 lines and 4 D, or predominantly 2 lines and sub people in to give forwards a break?

3 lines 4 D
Fortunately there are enough skaters on the team that can put the puck in the net in Wake's absense. Micaela Long, Kacey Bellamy, and Julie Allen stepped up offensively this weekend. Our third line played well, drawing penalties and not giving BC a chance to set up offensively. Shannon Sisk had two really strong games, as did Sarah Cuthbert. Converted forward Courtney Sheary adds a lot of punch to the line

Even if Wake can play just the PP and an occasional shift against UMD, she will be a greater force on the ice having rested than if she played hurt this weekend and had to start healing all over again.

This team is a lot of fun to watch. They execute well in all zones and have necessarily brought their conditioning to a new level.

NCAA rules...you cannot charge for broadcasts for tournament games. UNH free-streamed their game last year too. Not to say you couldn't have other technical issues but you should not have a repeat of what happened at UMD a year ago.

Unlike last year's game.. UMD *WILL* skate three lines throughout the game unless it turns into a special teams game. Last year's game they went with two lines and Tawni Mattila got some shifts in relief. With Heidi Pelttari/Mattila/Blais (or Winberg) there's a third line that can be on the ice and not always be stuck in their own zone against a good team. Blais went back to third line Saturday coming off her concussion, but maybe we'd be lucky enough to see her back on first line Saturday?

The 'Dogs cannot take stupid penalties (Irwin and Larocque each have 40+ penalties for over 90 minutes) and end up in the box for 8 UNH powerplays like they did in the Semi-Final last year.

Johanna Ellison is a great goaltender, but I cannot see a performance duplicating Kim Martin's game at the DECC, especially on the road. I'll say 5-3 UMD, with an empty net goal, but that's probably way too many goals in this game.

I am sure that the talent runs deeper than just 1 player......so that wouldn't be too smart now would it...

Should be an outstanding game to watch....

I am pretty confident this will not happen.....The girls are ready and excited.....and I believe they will show their best disciplined "A" game!!

Pretty tough to duplicate that performance, regardless of your name being Ellison, Vetter, Shaus or Vezina.;)

or 'Brick Wall' :D (only because some people have given Ellison that nickname from her high school career here)

Of course this comment came from looking at UNH stats . . . Wakefield seems to be the most potent offensive weapon they have. It was not suggested she is the ONLY one . . .

For UMD a lot rides on Haley Irwin. I've contended all season that their hopes ignite and fade with the energy and committment she brings to each game. I love that line . . . Irwin, Holmlov and Winberg (who has come on much better in the latter end of the season). They seem to create something out of nothing. Then the pace changes a bit with Tuominen, O'Toole and Fridfinnson, and can be just frenetic with Blais, Matilla and Peltari.

UMD has also had more scoring out of their D than seems to be in the past few years - a lot of good, hard shooting from the outside with the Fs in down low . . . many scoring opportunities for them have started low, went high and then are knocked in off those rebounds from the lurking F's.

You will see a UMD team that has played many games similar to last year's semi involving these two teams. Not many shots early but very solid D and above average goal tending. Then, all of a sudden they score 2 or 3 quickly and the game's over. (They play better keep-away this year than last too!)

I agree that your D are a strength of the team. Beyond Larocque, the rest seem pretty stay-at-home. They don't roam around the opponent's goal line as they did 5 years ago. The other offensive puck-carrying D component might be something that was sacrificed with Pelttari moving up front.

I agree . . . though I think the issue isn't one of health as much as chemistry. Last year she played mostly with O'Toole and Holmlov (and Iya until . . . ).

Of course, most of Larocque's points have come from assists . . . the shooting from outside and getting the first assist off the rebounded goal. And, she is key on the first PP grouping as well . . .

I would say Minton gets the start. The fact that they went to her in the conference championship speaks volumes. She made a few solid saves against BC, and just seems more comfortable in net than Herman.

BC's goal was a bit soft as it trickled through Minton, but it was a blast by Fardelmann.
