Marian University Women’s Hockey
Accepted into NCHA
Fond du Lac, Wis. – Marian University is pleased to announce the addition of women’s hockey to its current sports offerings. Marian was accepted this week into the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA), and the Sabres will suit up for their inaugural season in fall 2009. The Sabres will now offer fifteen Division III Intercollegiate sports.
The NCHA women’s division first year of competition was the 2000-2001 season. The NCHA women’s division is currently comprised of Concordia University-Wisconsin, Finlandia University, Lake Forest College, UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, and UW-Superior. Marian University will bring the league’s membership to eight teams. All NCHA schools compete at the Division III level.
Marian University Board of Trustees Chair, Sr. Mary Mollison, CSA, is pleased with the addition of women’s hockey at Marian. “Our athletic offerings provide many students with an opportunity for a quality Marian education. Women’s hockey will enable more women to continue their involvement with a sport about which they are passionate.”
Dr. Josefina Castillo Baltodano, Marian University president, stated, “Marian University is excited by the decision of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association to admit our new women’s hockey team into the league. The NCHA is the premier Division III league in the country and it is a privilege to become a part of it.”
“Student athletes at Marian are successful academically,” stated Baltodano. “They graduate at a high rate and they contribute greatly to the quality of social life on campus. The addition of women’s hockey provides the university with another opportunity for women students to participate in a competitive sport, which adds additional value to our already strong athletic program.”
“Marian University is honored to be a member of the NCHA in women’s ice hockey allowing for competition in one of the more prestigious hockey conferences in the nation,” said Marian athletic director Doug Hammonds. “The women’s ice hockey team will join the University’s men’s hockey team in utilizing Fond du Lac’s premiere Blue Line Family Ice Center for practice and competition.”
The Sabres will become the 48th women’s hockey team in the country to compete at the NCAA Division III level and the sixth in the state of Wisconsin.
The NCAA Division III women’s ice hockey schedule begins in mid-October, with the NCHA Tournament culminating the season in late February or early March.
Marian University is a premier Catholic university located in Fond du Lac, Wis. The University offers more than 40 undergraduate and graduate programs at its main campus, and a variety of adult accelerated-degree programs in facilities throughout Wisconsin. The size of the University permits a very favorable student–faculty ratio, one of the lowest among Wisconsin campuses. Campus planning efforts are under way to enhance facilities on the University’s 104-acre Fond du Lac campus, as well as at Marian’s 15-acre Town of Byron campus and facilities in Appleton and West Allis. Marian’s programs of study are designed to meet a full range of pre-professional and professional academic needs, including business, education, the arts, sciences, nursing and technology. Marian University is a community committed to learning, dedicated to service and social justice, and joined together by spiritual traditions.
