1st period was dominated by Amherst, as they outshot Trinity by 16 to 6, to some extent reflecting a 5x3 advantage for 1:28. Molly Malloy pounced on the rebound of a Randi Zukas shot from the top of the left circle and tucked it under Isabel Iwachiw for the powerplay goal. Skating even Amherst then got an odd man rush with CC Wyshnytzky breaking in on the right, making a nice feed across to Michelle McGann. Iwachiw made the save on McGann but left the rebound at the top of the crease and Kate Dennett popped it in for a 2-0 Amherst lead. Amherst controlled 75% of the play during the 1st with Trinity's only time spent in the offensive zone on their powerplay.
The 2nd saw the Amherst forecheck produce a 3-0 led as Anna MacLean and Megan Curry worked hard behind the goal line with Cuury's shot saved and bobbled by Iwachiw before Emily Vitale stuffed it into the net.
Trinity was able to control play and move the puck on their powerplay and they cut into the lead when Alexa Guglielmi's drive into traffic from the left side eluded Krystyn Elek and the dangerous Kim Weiss banged the puck home from the top of the crease with Elek down. Before the Zamboni remade the ice a friend commented on the lack of skate marks in the Amherst defensive zone for the 2nd period.
The 3rd period shots were 13 to 8 Trinity, but they were not able to beat Elek again and the 3-1 score held. Trinity had a faceoff in the Amherst zone with 2:09 to play and chose not to pull their goalie. They did get her out the last :50, only to have Amherst's Lindsey Harrington dash the length of the ice and make a dive to net one in the open goal that was just wide. Amherst played with the 3rd with a decidedly more conservative mode of attack, or they were just dialing it in. Trinity seemed to play the whole game a bit down, and had they drawn closer than 3-1, Amherst may have figured to dial the intensity back up, but that kind of play might hurt next weekend up in Middlebury or in some of their later season games against the likes of Gustavus, St. Thomas, Elmira, RIT or Plattsburgh; turn it on and off is decidedly not a good habit for such a vastly talented team.
So the stage is set for 4-0 Amherst to visit 4-0-1 Middlebury next Saturday. That should be worth a trip to Vermont!
