Great game at Amherst College's Orr Rink as #10 Trinity visited #4 Amherst this afternoon.
This was a very entertaining game, but I do not think it as close as the score and shots (Amherst 33 Trinity 25) indicate. When playing at even strength Amherst had much the better of the play, although Trinity came on a bit in the third period. Isabel Iwachiw deserves credit for keeping things close. Amherst had several breakaway chances (one a clean break by Tarasai Karega, shorthanded, which resulted in a backhand off the crossbar, early in the 2nd period) and hit a couple of posts. Amherst was effective forechecking and makes the transition to the offensive very quickly. The first goal came when Lindsey Harrington created a turnover on the right side boards and fed Kate Dennett in the high slot from where she beat Iwachiw low to her stickside (she is a lefty goalie). Courtney Hanlon's first goal came when Karega forced a turnover deep in the right corner, got the puck up the boards to Harrington who walked in and fed cross ice to to the left face off dot. Hanlon's one timer beat Iwachiw low stickside. Krystyn Elek was strong in goal for Amherst earning her first shutout of the season.
Trinity is a quality team, but Amherst may be the team to beat this season.
I highly recommend a trip to Hartford tomorrow for the 3pm rematch.
