Another season is upon us! Thought we could use a thread. Expect good things from Union this year. They won their first game yesterday!

Union has great coaching, done a good job of scouting and they have existing strength in goal and with some of the players from last year. I am hoping they will surprise us all this year. Does anyone want to predict which team will fall first to Union?

I would expect that the team will continue to improve, though by how much will be the question. Given the limited resources they are playing against a stacked deck, and three or four additional wins should be considered huge gains.

Sacred Heart, Nov. 28 ? More likely they should be able to pick up at least one before then, as they have a couple each against Vermont and North Dakota.

i honestly don't see them beating anyone but sacred heart again this year...sorry...the scores will be closer once again unless they lose their top goalie to an injury and i really hope that doesn't happen...if it does happen they'll have a very hard time competing at all...i can't imagine their other goalies are as good as her judging by her previous stats

I think optimism is the right attitude....I have a relative on this time....and in the end...I say...you are playing D1 hockey and receiving a top private college education...Union has a very good reputation and ...well , work hard , get good grades and get yourself a great job:) ...they can't all be womens' prep school or college hockey coaches:)

You say that like Vermont and North Dakota will be pushovers. Vermont dominated them in two shutouts last year, and North Dakota is an up and coming team with a proven winner at the helm in Idalski. I think Union will still have their hands plenty full with both.

I'd like to see Union succeed. I just think it's asking too much to ask a team that doesn't have athletic money to give to be able to compete day in and day out with programs that do. Just mho.......

I have to agree. Union is a LONG way away from even competing with most of the division I schools let alone start beating them. Another long season in store for Union.

Union was outshot and beat a team a team of teenagers in a shootout. That same team, the day before, lost to RPI, last year's 9th place team, 7-2. Union may be improved, but that game doesn't prove it.

Just for the record, I'm not saying that Union will be as good as either Vermont or North Dakota, let alone that they will find that those two teams are pushovers. But I do expect that they will win a couple this year (in addition to Sacred Heart) if Day has the same kind of season as last year, just based on the number of close calls they had last year for upset wins.

George Morrison is a lovely guy and we are all praying for him. He was an inspiration for the team last year.

I believe Union College is showing a commitment to the team. They are putting money into the program as demonstrated by strong coaching and strong scouting. Their goalie coach Ali Boe made a name for herself at Harvard and I watched her play a couple of games for the Oval Extreme (Hayley Wickenheiser) and she stoned the competition. Best of all the AD actually shows up to the games!

I hear ya.......I let my UVM bias cloud my response. Union could very well take one from Vermont OR ND if they don't play their best. If either one of them looks past Union prepping for the next upset of their own, they could easily be an upset victim themselves. A hot goalie can definitely steal a game, and Lundy is more than capable. I guess we'll find out soon enough (in 10 days, to be exact)!!!

It's hard for Union to really compete at the D1 level because of the fact that they are unable to give scholarships. You can't really expect to be at the top tier when you can't even recruit like your competitors can. It's kind of sad, which just makes me root for them as the underdogs.

I think there are quite of few other ECAC teams that can't give scholarships (6 out of 11).

True, but they have ridiculous endowments, along with equally ridiculous applications each year, allowing for some pretty fat financial aid packages. They also put considerable resources behind the teams, some more so than others, but all substantially more than Union.

Union was on fire tonight! Asano's made some very smart coaching moves. BU 3-Union 2!
