It probably goes without saying that success at D3 (even when there is lots of it) doesn't guarantee success at D1. Dave Flint has paid his dues and has lots of experience with men, women and now the National Teams. But...
What does history tell us about coaches moving up to D1? I haven't had much luck searching for info and thought a poster here might know a thing or two about the subject.

Going off the top of my head I would say there is little track record to make any judgement. Obviously Schuler. I didn't look but didn't Seely come from D3. Where did Jeff Vizenor coach before MSU? Beyond that I can't think of any others who might fit that description. Historically didn't Rick Filghera at Maine come from D3?. Truth off the top of my head I can't think of to many cases on the men's side that a coach jumps from D3 to D1.

I think the key to whether Flint or anyone else sucedes is what type of resources the school is willing to provide the coach. I'd say from a distance NU looks like they have upped the ante and Flint will have more to work with then either Woog or Schuler. Maybe not as much as others. Note 2 other hires this year saw schools willing to commit to hiring away other D1 school's coaches which might suggest a little more $$$ to get the proven guy.

Seele, who went from Manhattanville to Clarkson, has had success moving from D3 to D1. This past season (Seele's 5th season) Clarkson went .698 and just missed a spot to the NCAA tourney.

What other head coaches do we have in D1 now that started out at the D3 level?

Idalski at UND might be one to watch / follow in a quest for an answer...or at least some insight on the topic.
