Brittany Lyons, Canton High Star, to join new women's ice hockey team at Winchendon Prep.
No offense, but this is a step backwards for anyone doing a PG year, or who would be an upperclassman for that matter. Miss Lyons has the talent to play at the next level, and needs a combination of full season training, competition, and exposure to achieve that goal. Playing DII prep hockey, for a fledgling program, is not the way to do it.

there could have been more "other factors" that eventually lead to her joining that school and program that you may not know about...

So any predictions about next year and how each team will do? Who do you think will be crowned champion?

I'll go with Nobles in DI since they only graduate a couple and have brought in some quality players as well. Governors will be tough to beat with all the toung girls a year older and they are tournament tested. I'll throw Rivers and Greenwich in the mix as well

I like the talent on Rivers too, however I don't think the coach there plays to win. I think she likes to keep everyone happy and doesn't use the talent she has to her teams benefit.

Anyone know what's gone on with any teams recruiting-wise? What teams re-loaded, what teams tried to rebuild, etc...?
Look for Brooks to improve, with the Berkshire coach moving over to N. Andover.

This surprised me too. Knowing the Coach (current/?previous?) and speaking with her on several occasions last season I got no sense that there was any dissatisfaction and I believe that the season was generally a success.

Not only is this a good opportunity but, it also moves the Coach closer to their families. The Berkshire School is a great school but, it is as far west as you can get without getting your feet wet in the Hudson!! Distance whoa.....

I've heard that both Andover and Milton have done some heavy recruiting. Does anyone know what Nobles or Choate has coming in?

Nobles gets a sophmore from Brooks and a Sophmore from BBN for sure, both are going to the NDC U16 this month.

I will definitely look forward to seeing Brewster this year. They showed up at the end of last year and gave Choate a run for their money in their first D1 playoff appearance after joining D1 only the year before. They graduated a few key players and their starting goalie, but I know that the '09 senior class will step up to the challenge and fill in. Also, the recruits coming in will most definitely do their job, and the new junior/sophomore class will come in huge. Last year was seen as a "rebuilding year" (check their website and the coach confirms it), yet they made the D1 playoffs for the first time. Now that their whole team is ready to play another year together, I think they are unstoppable.

I agree Brewster will be good. Even though they graduated a few key players last year and there starting goalie, they will be strong. The senior class is strong and will put in some numbers. there incoming freshmen class looks good to. Yes, there sophmore/junior class is big and were a big part of team last year. Should be an interesting year for them. Watching there last few games last year showed me they were for real. Makes for good competition for all.

Both Nobles and Choate only graduated a couple from the top two lines. Both teams are returning 9 or 10 seniors/juniors, their goaltenders, and both had a deep bench of younger talent also. I don't see either team looking for a lot of changes. It doesn't mean they won't get good players in who'll see quality ice time, but I don't see big changes on either team.
One never knows this far ahead of the season, but these are the two teams to bet on going deep into the post season. Last years post season saw all 1 goal wins in D1 and 3 or 4 of the 8 games were overtime wins. The rest of the post season field have too many changes to bet they'll be in position to meet that level of parity this year.
Now that their whole team is ready to play another year together, I think they are unstoppable.
Their 'whole team' is not playing another year together after graduating as many 1/2 line players and the starting goalie as Brewster did. And no offense to the coach's web site statement is meant here but a "rebuilding year" is usually the year after that happens.

Well, they did graduate some serious talent in '07, so I can see where the rebuilding statement comes from. Unfortunately, the way Prep hockey is with two or three top players per class, you tend to be in a something of a continual "rebuilding" mode. ;)

the canadians are taking over new england!
maritime girls seem to be choosing prep hockey over there provincial leagues but im pretty sure most of the top notch canadian talent stays up. thats not taking anything away from the ones in prep hockey... they sure can fly!

No question that HC looks upon New England Prep as not up to the level of provincial teams which reflects in how they look at selections for development camps, national teams etc. They also are looking to "grow the game" at home so moving to the US for school works against your chances for national program attention. Learned this firsthand!
