I know this topic gets tossed around on the Div I board (and here as well) all the time. Here's a recent article from the Penn State Daily Collegian about why it won't be happening any time soon, although there are those who are always looking to find a way to make it happen.

Interesting read... thanks.
Pretty much confirms what we've known all along.

its not just money. Its the rink...or getting a new rink.
I think they are fine at ACHA. With that history they have no problem getting good players. A top player in my area is going there...Nick Seravalli.

Penn State has so much to offer beyond D1 hockey that many players choose to go there instead of playing D1. D1 hockey isn't all it's cracked up to be especially for those players who won't go pro.

Many? Let's not go crazy. maybe one or two every five years.
The article restated what I've been saying for years. If Penn State wanted real college hockey, they'd have it.

No, that type of player opts for Harvard or Cornell or another Ivy. The players that opt for Penn State are certainly capable players, they are not D1 players however. If you are capable of playing D1, you play D1 and hope to go pro. You do not decide that a school has so much to offer that you will forgo D1 to go to that school.

Almost a normal statement from you for once.

Sorry, big guy. A kid turned down a D1 scholarship last year and was cut at Penn State's tryouts. Also, another kid left a D1 school for Penn State. It's happened over and over.

Three seniors from last season -- Matt Schwartz (D-1 Bentley), Mike McMullen (D-1 Fairfield) and Bryan Sobonya (D-3 Utica)
Former Icers that come immediately to mind that came to Penn State from D-1 teams include Paul Mammola (U-Mass Lowell), Joe Maglaque (Fairfield) and Mike Carrano (Air Force).

None of those "transfers" had scholarships, as Bentley doesn't give schollies, Fairfield didn't (hence, why the program is no more) and D-III schools don't give scholarships.
Mammola got cut from Lowell, and was never on scholarship.
I'd still like to know from Mr. loophole who turned down a scholarship. I doubt he has a name, because he made it up, but if there was a name, I'm sure he'd tell us.
Like Hux said, any player that gets a real college hockey scholarship isn't going to Penn State, and if they're capable, there are plenty of better academic places (not even in the ECAC) than Penn State that have real college hockey.

The fact that Bentley and Fairfield don't give scholarships is not germain to the conversation. There are lots of kids who play D1 who don't get schollies...shows how much you know. But, oh wait, Crazy played at D1 at podunk U. We are so impressed!!!
Also, I don't believe in posting names on forums such as this. All you have to do is ask some of the players on the team. They will tell you.

Yes it is. You claimed guys were turning down D-I schollies in droves to play for the Penn Stiff Wannabe's.
We got a few names, and then I proved you wrong.
I have 400 posts that tell the truth, you have seven that are full of crap. WE ARE SO IMPRESSED!!
If you are going to provide information, provide information, but don't make claims if you can't back it up, which obviously, you can't.

Hey Dum Dum, Obviously you can't read. I said a kid turned down a D1 scholarship and came to Penn State and then got cut during tryouts. I never said kids were turning down schollies in droves. I also never said kids transferred from schools w/schollies to come to Penn State. Go back to remedial reading. You are so jealous it's funny!

And the people who actually know about the level of play in the American Collegiate Wannabe Association call BS on you. Give us a name.
I bet you hang out with Lyin' Larry Bloom.
Which reminds me, has anyone seen those Penn State arena plans???

You know Eddie, I've actually met Larry in person. He came to one of our tournaments we were hosting about 2 seasons ago.
All I can say is that he's a very interesting character (different.)

if penn state went d1, none of the club kids would make the team, and if one or two of the kids actually did make the team, my guess is that the only ice they would see is penalty killing in practice.

That must have been scary! It would certainly make me wonder about the level of mental healthcare in the Lone Star State...
Greenmountain has it about right. The one or two unbelievably lucky players who made it through tryouts would basically be warm bodies who saw the vast majority of their playing time in practice... from the bench.

I wish there was a way to respond to negative rep directly to the provider, but since they didn't sign it, I thought I'd do it here....
"Beat this dead horse harder."
I mentioned in my original post that I know this gets talked about every so often, but this time there was official comment from the school, so I thought it was a worthy topic. It's not like I was cluttering the club board - there's very little activity here this time of year anyway. Now if I had started a thread about whether EA Sports will include Penn State in the Big Ten Conference of their video game....that would have been worthy of your comment...
