Former Dartmouth defenseman, Emily Nerland,is working on her Masters in Journalism at USC.
She has a hockey blog at http://www.nerland.blogspot.com

This week she wants to collect hockey superstitions. You can go through the blog or directly to the forum at

FYI My superstition is that whenever I park the car at the arena, if possible I park facing the arena. It's like facing the shooter sort of thing. I don't go out of my way, it's OK if the car is at an angle to the arena, but I won't face away from the arena. Of course I am more particular when I attend my son, the goalie's games.

My superstition is that I don't leave the stands during play and am always back in my spot before play resumes.

Message: I love Big Green Hockey, and especially the rocking women. I go to every home game and as many away games as I can fit in. My superstition is that I wear my lucky green hat for all home games, and I eat one hot dog at the start of every period and after every goal. The two times I couldn't (wisdom teeth taken out) we lost. But eating that many hot dogs can sometimes get rough, especially when we're playing Quinnipiac or Cornell and beat them by 8. But at least I can put them on DBA.
Good to see that I'm not the only one that has found the addictive Thompson Arena food item known as NiccoDogs (TM). :D

Posted this over on the mens side as well:

In my experience, Hockey players are hand down the most superstitious athletes out there. Worse then baseball pitchers. Goalies are the top of the chart, or bottom depending on how you look at it. One certain goalie that I worked with had to have their left leg stretched before the right leg. Hamstrings before groin. Other players would only let me tape them and if I wasn't there all H-E-double hockey sticks broke out. I did have a few little ones but I know some that have almost OCD about things like this. Some of the super fans were worse then the players.

I have a pair of red and white checkerboard Smuckers Jam socks that I always have worn when my daughter plays whether I am there or not. They started getting a little worn, so I got a second pair. I started wearing them when my son plays also. Carried his team to a championship.

Icemom is easily identified by the crowd of camera and sound men from What Not To Wear surrounding her. Stacy London will be found crying near by. :p
