They threatened BU with it in the Worcester men's regionals the last time they were in Worcester with BC. Said they would distribute bench minors.
oh I know, and I'm saying, with as vulgar as UVM student 'fans' are, if they ever actually made it to the NCAA's for a change, if the same thing were enforced, UVM would be shorthanded often

Well, I would as a non-American, regardless of the team I'm on. I'd be irritated at my team's fans because in chanting it, they're now chanting against a member of their own team: me. As an aside, it also doesn't make sense!:o
I hear do hear yelling when I play - when I'm off the playing surface. I love the sound of the crowd; I love the songs, I love the volume. It all makes the experience.
That particular chant would bother me, because I find it offensive. I don't know how else to explain it, but that's just my side of the story. I guess I'm just pretty fired up to be Canadian. ;) It's really a moot point, anyway.
I definitely have to agree with ironic chef on this.

U-S-A is offensive? You didn't happen to catch the way that the US team was treated by the local fans at the World Juniors a couple of years ago in Vancouver did you?
Fans have the right to chant whatever they want, especially when it's not obviously vulgar. Even in this day and age, with Bush doing his thing, I think you'd be hard pressed to call a U-S-A chant vulgar, even in the context of a dig against recruiting mostly Euro's for a Minnesota hockey team.
I think people CHOOSE to get offended by things like this. It's great to be proud to be from Canada, but thicken that skin a bit. These chants shouldn't bother you unless they ring true.
Should high school goalies get offended by that chant at a college hockey game?
A better chant would've been "Strip That Title!"

Now THAT'S offensive. Too much like the "check their passports" that was started by the Harvard fans in 2003 . . . that didn't last long becuase those fans realized they wouldn't have lasted long . . . . we UMD fans can only take so much . . .

This sorta reminds me of the Gopher-Sioux men's games back in the Doug Woog era when the teams played in Grand Forks. Woog recruited only Minnesota players for his teams. ND was known for having a majority of Canadians, so the chant from visiting Gopher fans was often 'USA, USA'. At that time the Gophers were not only 100% Americans but 100% Minnesotan. During one intermission the Gopher cheerleaders skated a banner around the rink that said 'America's Team'. They were summarily pelted with dead, frozen gophers that Sioux fans normally saved for the Minnesota players.

Irreverent or hostile? It can be a fine line.
Having seen Badger fans in many settings over the years, my take is that they make irreverence an art form, but rarely intend hostility.
Regrettably, I wasn't able to make it to the tournament this year, so I can't really pass judgement on the cheer in question. But based on my past experiences with UW, I find it very difficult to believe that there was malicious intent.
I will agree with ironic chef on at least one point. A cheer that puts down one of your own team members is ignorant at best. And I would hope we could all agree that intelligence is to be preferred.
