Note that for the most part (maybe even all) the Ontario based teams participating are the Midget AA teams, not the Jr teams that play in the PWHL.

Kudo's to the Rochester Organisation. That is a great looking and easy to navigate website. Well Done.

What is this, some kind of disclaimer in case a Canadian team doesn’t walk away with the championship? :p
PLAYING. thanks for the clarification, as I myself was wondering. I wonder how come those Jr teams aren’t playing anyway? Or do I dare even go there again...

PWHL teams are only allowed 3 blackout weekends during the season. Most teams use one for a trip down south for a showcase event like Brown etc, or a series of exhibition games. Many teams are in the Aeros tourney in October and the Winterlude Tourney in February. In addition the PWHL schedule calls for 32 games, for the most part played on the weekends due to travel considerations. That leaves for little other options.
PWHL teams also shutdown next week due to the U18 event. Therefore many of these teams play league games this weekend, even though some are missing players that start camp with their respective provincial U18 teams this weekend.

The Midget AA (U17) Aeros won this event last year, beating NAHA White in the Final.

and remember that most US teams are usually U17 as well. Most USA U19 teams are made up of a majority of 90,91, 92 and a few 93's, so Canadian Midgets are on par with more US U19 teams as far as age goes.

Why didn't the PWHL teams come to Brown last year? Why this year, just out of curiosity? Why do some of the PWHL teams come to the NAHA Labor Day tournament, while others do not. Why do some of the PWHL teams come to the Polar Bear tourney, again while others do not. Just asking so that I can better understand the whole PWHL thought process. It seems that the same teams travel south for the big tournaments. Whitby, Durham, and NCCP come to mind as teams that attend several of the big tourneys in the USA.

Most Ontario Based Jr teams (= Int AA = PWHL) have very similar age composition. Typical teams have 2 or 3 18 year olds, 10-12 16 and 17 year olds and 1 or 2 15 year olds. In Ontario some refer to them as Midget AAA with a few overagers.

Thought process varies from team to team and even from year to year as coaches change. Some teams like Durham and NCCP go to NAHA showcase year after year, but you won't see them down south otherwise. Durham also does a tour to a couple of schools with games. Other teams like the Aeros only practice early on and don't show up for games until Stoney Creek. The Stoney Creek, Polar Bear and NAHA tourneys fall outside of the PWHL regular season dates, so all teams are free to go. Some teams don't like to go to NAHA as the OWHA discourages attending non-sanctioned tournaments, and you have to get your own insurance coverage. Many teams stay at/near home during the holidays and play in the Missy showcase that is held the same time as Polar Bear. As you can see too many variables to get a common reasoning for all 18 Ontario Jr teams.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Stoney Creek attended Brown last year, and I know Mississauga attended Brown the previous year. Three PWHL teams (Toronto Aeros, Mississauga and Brampton) are attending Brown this year. I would imagine they chose it because of the strong US teams who participated last year.
As I explained before, NAHA isn't popular with more teams because of its timing. Ottawa and Durham use it as their "pre-season training camp". Other teams feel that starting their season with team practices in late Aug/early Sept rather than games is more beneficial at that point. The issue of it being non-sanctioned is another complication. I would imagine there is also the matter of spacing--with Stoney Creek Showcase in mid-Sept, most teams would prefer to space out their tourney participation better between Sept and March, rather than having too much upfront.
I understand the Jr. Aeros had planned to attend Polar Bear last year but had to pull out late because the OWHA would not make a decision on the U18 selections and Christmas camp plans which could have left them without enough players. However, the Midget Aeros have attended Polar Bear the past three years, as has Whitby. Other Jr. teams prefer to attend the Mississauga Christmas Tourney, which is a very popular event much closer to home and family in the holiday season.
The most popular events for PWHL teams to enter (with largest participation) are Stoney Creek in Sept, Aeros in Oct, Mississauga in Dec, and NCCP Winterlude in Feb. These make for a well spaced tourney schedule, minimal travel and lots of good competition guaranteed. Of course, it's always nice to play someone different for a change, so many teams try to plan a US road trip, instead of 1 of these (or in addition, as budget and remaining blackout avails may permit).
Not really all that hard to figure out.

Did I read that right, a top PWHL team had to "Back" out of a tournament at the last minute because of last minute circumstances, leaving them with too short of a bench..... hmmmm sounds familiar:D
FYI to my knowledge no PWHL teams attended the Brown tournament last year. From memory (which falters from time to time) there were 5 teams, NAHA White, Belle Tire, Troy Ice Cats, Tiger Lillies, and Assabet 19U. Each team played each other in a round robin showcase.
With the New England district tryouts for the NDC festival this weekend, will NAHA be short many/any players?

I know of at least one player that will be missing because of the tryouts. I am headed up there for the tournament and will know more then.

Please note the the St-Jerome Invitational popular with some teams is held at the same time as the Brown Showcase. NCCP, Durham and Polar Bear have been regular visitors at that tourney. St-Jerome is about 30 minutes north of Montreal.

I checked and all the Ontario teams are of the Midget AA variety. Presuming that the US teams are of the U19 AA variety, I see the strong teams as NAHA White, Ohio Flames, Little Caesars and Toronto Aeros. I suspect that NAHA Red might be playing on Sunday as well winning their group.
This would give you Quarter Matchups as follows:
NAHA Wh - WC1
LC - NAHA Red
Aeros - WC2
Ohio - WC3
Not sure how the brackets go after that, but if the first two semis meet each other then the semis would be NAHA White vs LC and Aeros vs Ohio with a repeat of last years final. I think dark horse teams would be Stoney Midgets and NSA. Note that the NCCP team there is the second NCCP Midget team. The top NCCP midget team was at Assabet last weekend.
