Sam Turner is no longer with the team, but remains in school at UND.
Fellner was granted another year of eligibility from the NCAA, I'm not entirely sure on the details of that decision.

I'll add to this thread because the other relevant thread was moved to the Fan Forum archives, never to be seen again. Also, I don't know if an answer to this question was ever fully resolved...

The latest word from a Gopher women's hockey official (whom I shall keep anonymous, as it was an off-the-cuff conversation) is that the Lam twins will be taking online classes from UND during the Olympic year, which will make them eligible to play for the Sioux in 2010-11 and not held out the extra season.

The Gopher official also implied that that arrangement had been reached prior to the official announcement of the twins' transfers.

Lamoureux playing this weekend?
I know they are centralized but can they play exhibition games?

I'm with this guy:

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Brett Potas is so angry the University of North Dakota may drop its Fighting Sioux nickname that he's canceled his season hockey tickets and says he won't give his alma mater another dime.

"They tried to get me to think about it. I said that I've been thinking about it for years," Potas said. He says he doesn't want to be associated with a university that takes a politically correct position.

I'm with this guy:If you make one change, make them all change. I find it funny that bigger Division 1 programs like FSU, Illinois and Utah didn't have much trouble keeping their name. I wonder how much $$$ these schools give back to the tribes.

In the case of Illinois it was not the name that was considered offensive, it was the use of the "Chief Illiniwek" symbol. According to Wikipedia the University athletic teams were named the Fighting Illini in honor of Illinoisans who fought in World War I; the use of the name "Illini" dates to the 19th century and pre-dates the use of the "Chief Illiniwek" symbol.

The University stopped using the disputed symbol at the conclusion of the 2007 men's basketball season. University teams continue to use the nickname.

I believe that Florida State and Utah continue to use their symbols.

I hope they stick to their guns and don't give in. There is nothing offensive about the name, or the logo etc.(unlike say the Cleveland Indians and Chief Wahoo) so the NCAA should just leave well enough alone.

I can see both sides. The NC$$ conveniently looks the other way when the FSU football fans are doing the tomahawk chop, so they are obviously picking on the little guy here. And if you can have "Fighting Irish", then why not "Fighting Sioux". The Irish were pushed around by the English for more centuries than the Sioux. But it is hard for UND to take the moral high ground when their biggest financial backer was kind of a racist goof.

Overall, I don't get why people would stop supporting the program if they have to change their name. You cheer for the kids playing, and they are going to be the same kids no matter what they have on their jerseys.
