Thought I would start a thread for this tourney which is has quickly built a reputation as top notch, with some outstanding young talent. You can even get video feeds of games after the fact from the tourney web site. (http://home.cogeco.ca/~midgetaasabres)

Just to clarify, this weekend's tournament features Canadian Midget AA teams and their American equivalents; next weekend, the Intermediate AA (or Junior, if you like) tournament takes place; the website for that is:

http://www.geocities.com/scjrsabres/

As Hux says, both tournaments are very well organized.

To further clarify, all of the teams in this weekend's tourney feature players in the '90 to '93 birth years, while next weekend's will have older players, some of whom have birth years as early as '86.

Hux, no NAHA either weekend right?

No NAHA at midget. They were going to Int with a skeleton crew, and lost several participants to college visits, so withdrew a few weeks ago.

The Midget event that took place Sep 14-16 was won by Sudbury Midget AA. They won the final over Hamilton. Other two teams in the final four were Stoney Creek and Nepean.

The Junior event (aka U21, aka Int AA) that took place this past weekend was won by Missy. 32 teams in the event. Two US teams made it to the top 16. Honeybaked ended up in the final. NAHA champs Little Ceasars got ousted in the round of 16 in a shoot out.

Great format with 32 teams. After a round robin of 3 games within pools, top two teams from each pool are then seeded in the Final 16 A-Bracket. There is also a consolation round for the other teams.

Results from the Final 16 onwards after the 3 game round robin.

Final 16:
Toronto - Brampton 2-1
Cornwall - Oakville 2-0
NCCP - Stoney Creek 3 - 2
Whitby - Markham 4 - 0
Durham - London 5 - 4
Mississauga - Bluewater 3-2
Honeybaked - Windsor 3-2 (OT)
Pacific Steelers - Little Ceasars 1 - 0 (SO)

Quarterfinals:
NCCP - Toronto 2-1
Whitby - Cornwall 5-2
Mississauga - Durham 4 - 2
Honeybaked - Steelers 1 - 0

Semis:
Missy - NCCP 3-2
Honeybaked - Whitby 2-1 (SO)

Final:
Missy - Honeybaked 3-0

P.S.

Consolation round was won by Aurora over Cambridge (Cambridge was the team that won the Union tourney a few weeks ago)

... The Junior event (aka U21, aka Int AA) that took place this past weekend...

Just to clarify again: the Junior event may be aka U21 but the majority of players who populate Junior teams are Midget age and have not yet graduated from high school. This is not to say that the Junior tournament is 'better' than the Midget - they're both well-run tournaments and they're both popular with scouts. But, of the players from Ontario who have gone on to play D1 hockey in the NCAA over the past couple of seasons, only one to my knowledge came from a Midget team (happy to be corrected). All the others came from Junior teams or NWHL teams.

You are correct. Ontario Int AA or Junior as the locals call it is pretty much equivalent to the US U19 AA teams in terms of players ages.

The Stoney Creek Junior Showcase has quickly evolved into THE top event around and without a doubt the scouts favourite. Congrats to the event organizers who have again demonstrated they are the gold standard to which all other events should be aspiring to emulate for scouts and players alike. This is the second year that my daughter has played in this tournament. I have to say that I was extremely impressed by how well this tournament was run last year. It was even better this year. The online scores were updated quickly, the stats were very detailed including shots on goal, many of the games were videotaped and could either be purchased on DVD or watched online. The fact that the games are all played in one facility makes it easy for scouts to view several games.

As far as I am concerned, this is the model that other organizations should use to model their own tournaments after. And no, I am not a Stoney Creek parent.

By the way, there was a goalie from one of the U.S. teams taken away by Ambulance on Sunday morning. Does anyone know if she is okay?

I dunno about the Goalie, but there was also a high profile Ontario based player (U18 team) that left the rink with an injury on Sunday Morning.

Attended for three years now, once for the Midget event and twice for the Jr event. First class all the way. The Stoney Creek organisers do a fantastic job. Both the venue, level of competition and tourney format are great.

I saw that. I overheard one their coaching staff talking to one of the tournament officials. He said that she had somehow taken a shot in the side of the side of the jaw. Apparently her injuries were minor. Her jaw was not broken, she had a bit of cut that might require a few stitches and some loose, but no broken teeth. I didn't see it happen, but I'm surprised that it could happen given the face protection that they wear. My guess is that she either turned her head or it was a deflection.

Apparently what I heard was wrong. This was posted over in the Ontario Hockey Forum:

Her Jaw ended up being broken in 2 places, and has been wired shut. No sports for 2 weeks at least, and week by week after that.

The Ontario Hockey Forum reported that she was back in the rink later in the day. Apparently she had a mild concussion.

Any thoughts on the tournament? Surprises, etc?

The goalie that was taken away by ambulance on Saturday morning during the 3rd period of the Stoney Creek game was diagnosed with a neck sprain/bruise. She did lose consciousness briefly on the ice and complained of neck pain and as a precaution they kept her immobile on the ice until the ambulance came. She was able to move her hands and feet and was alert prior to leaving the ice. At the hospital they did a ct scan of her head, neck, and spine. All results were negative and she left the hospital in a neck brace which she will be wearing for about a week. She did make it back to the rink for her team's final game of the tournament to cheer them on. Being her father and watching all of this proceed I would like to thank everyone who helped keep her as comfortable as possible (with blankets, verbal support, etc) on the ice until medical help arrived. The medical treatment and care that she received at the hospital (Hamilton Health Sciences, McMaster University) was superb. Although the long ride back to the US was a bit more uncomfortable with the brace she still wanted to take the time to stop at Niagra Falls before crossing back to the states. She can't wait to return next year!

Even though I don't know the girl it's so good to hear that she appears to be OK. Those incidents involving the neck and head are very scary. I wish her a full speedy recovery and a great season when she returns.
