my understanding of these games is they are used for a coach to determine
his final roster spots therefore the team u see at these scrimmages are not the final team to hit the ice on Saturday of this week

Most of these games take place well after the season starts, so only a couple of the early games are used as part of the prep try-out process. In these games, the prep benches get pretty long. But, you still see the top players from each prep team. Last year I went to the Choate - Polar Bear game and got to see Hilary Knight on the ice an awful lot.

If you look at the results of these games over the past couple years, you'll find that the club teams compete pretty well. At least three New England club groups line up these games against prep schools, and while some are blow-outs, most are pretty competitive. Yeah, the preps win about 2/3 or 3/4 of the games, but it is closer than you might think or want to think. Certainly the prep teams have the advantage because of the older kids, but the younger club teams do pretty well.

I was refering to the games this past Wednesday Only. Some of the schools play each other to make final decisions, no intent to rate level of visiting team. They are friendly games in nature IMO

12/1 Choate 6 Exeter 0

For Choate, Emily Vitale had 2, Janice Yang had 3 assists. The goalies split the game; shots were 30 to 10.

Overall the Choate team looks pretty solid. A lot of young players (7 freshmen), and they are all strong. Not a lot of drop off after the first line. Really good D to D passing.

I felt bad for the Exeter goalie. Early in the 2nd with the score 3 zip there was body contact at the blue line with what looked like a Choate penalty. Very quickly the puck was fired deep into the zone by Exeter and the refs arm went up. The Exeter goalie (and I) assumed a penalty, and she headed for the bench (she made it). When Choate got the puck there was no whistle. She dove back toward the net, but didn't make it. Choate fired it from the red line and scored. Not a good way to start the season.

Exeter had some good players, but the talent looked a little thin. They had a least three end-to-end rushed by a couple of their D. While outplayed in the first half of the game, they did finish strong in the 3rd. Only a couple of fine saves by the younger Choate goalie maintained the shut-out.

This is pre-season ranking from HNIB:

1. Nobles
2. Cushing
3. Hotchkiss
4. Berkshire
5. Westminster
6. Taft
7. Lawrence
8. Choate
9. Loomis Chaffee
10. Tabor

I also think Brewster should be in the mix; just don't know who will be left out!!

Cushing Purple Penguins are the odds-on favorite this year with mostly seniors and two new PGs -- Tabor had OUTSTANDING stellar goaltending from junior Ciampa --stoned several breakaways ...Cushing had power play opportunity in last minutes but Tabor defense hung on..

As I remember from last year Tabor wasn't ranked in pre-season only to finish in the number one seed. Suprised Cushing lost to them. Must have been a great game to watch. I certainly wouldn't want to be Cushings next opponent. I predict they'll come out storming to win and prove they are all they are hyped up to be this season.

Tabor 2 - Cushing 1

Cushing played much of the game on the penalty kill.
BY the WAY, Tabor PP could not do much against Cushing. Could not manage more than a shot on net in many attempts.
also worthy of noting...... players were missing from Cushing team. will be a different game at Cushing...
cushing outplayed tabor... tabor goalie played well.
cushing goalie was shaky at best.
looking forward to the rematch:D :D :D

If I remember correctly from last year's posts, Cushing played most of last season on the penalty kill. And, everyone downplayed Tabor........all they did was keep on winnning. To quote Yogi, "it's like dejavu all over again". Or does that quote belong to John Fogerty?

PP must be over rated, the team obviously didn't need the advantage.

Tabor had (2) shots on an inexperienced goalie (JV goalie was in for Cushing due to injuries etc.) The fact that Cushing killed off every PP that Tabor had (which were numerous) and that they allowed minimum shots on the goalie shows there strength as a team...

From what I'm hearing the starting goalie for Cushing is out with an injury and the senior backup had a wedding. (although there is also a rumor she has quit). I still see Cushing being near or at the top of the heap when the season ends. Tabor is also a good team with a very good goalie. Great to have the season upon us.

Or, the flip side of the coin, the fact that they gave Tabor "numerous" PP opportunities might show a lack of discipline. No question Cushing is good but I don't think they're going to beat good teams playing a man down.

I agree that Cushing has to work on the amount of power plays that they give up. Playing short handed, even for a very good team, could be the difference in a close game and with Cushings schedule they should have many close games. Even though Cushing killed off all their short handed situations, it still limits their offensive chances and still may have been the difference in this game.
