After reading about two absolutely amazing goaltending performances this season, Molly Schaus’ 73 save performance in the Beanpot tournament and Brittany Martin’s 67 save performance in the NCAA quarterfinals, I have a couple of questions. I would give a slight edge to Martin’s performance in that it occurred in front of 5000 hostile fans in an NCAA tournament game against the #1 team in the country and she did end up only allowing one goal whereas Schaus gave up three goals. On the other hand, Schaus did come up with the win, while Martin’s heroics still resulted in a loss. So let’s just call it a tie and agree both were truly remarkable performances.

Anyway, I read in another thread that Schaus’ 73 saves was a record, so I have to assume that Martin’s 67 was a record in a one goal allowed game. My question is, does anyone know what the record for saves in a shutout is? Something for you statistic junkies to research.

Also, can any of the old-timers here regale us women’s college hockey newbies with tales of great goaltending performances from years past. I’ve heard Chanda Gunn had some incredible games while at Northeastern and I’m sure there are others that would make interesting reading.

To be precise, Schaus's record is for the regular season. One of BC's former goalies made 74 in a postseason game. I think 78 is the overall record IIRC.

Mercyhurst's Desi Clark made 78 saves in a 3 OT loss to Harvard in the 05 NCAA quarters. Greatest hockey game I have ever seen.

The two best shutouts the jump into my mind are:

Rebecca Lahar, 50 saves
Colgate 1, SLU 0, ECAC Quarters in 2004

Rachell Barrie, 49 saves
SLU 1, Dartmouth 0, Dec. 2002.

One of the best goaltending performances, male or female, that I've ever seen occurred in February of '05. Last game of the regular season at Bright, Yale against Harvard. Sarah Love made 49 saves and lost 1-0 when Nicole Corriero scored on a power play with 7 ticks on the clock. Heartbreaking but Love was outstanding and acrobatic, making tough save after tough save (and when I mean tough, I mean close in shots, not those floaters from the blue line). At the end, she just buried her mask in the ice, tired and beat. The crowd gave her a really nice ovation. She deserved it.

Oh yeah, the game that Martin replaced as the best 1-goal allowed game ever -- Sara DeCosta had 62 saves in a 1-0 2 OT loss in the 2000 ECAC quarterfinals.

I am pretty sure that the record for saves in a division 1 womens game was set by Josie Chapman from Colby College back in the 98-99 or 99-00 season against Brown. She made 91 saves in an 11-1 loss. This was Colby's final year in division 1. She made Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd for her performance.

I thought DeCosta had 67 saves (maybe that was unofficial) in that game, which at the time was the longest hockey game (M or W) in Dartmouth history. It was an amazing performance. She made "impossible" saves. Dartmouth finally won when Carly Haggard tipped in a soft shot from the point by Melissa Dolan.

Here's the box for that one -- 62 saves for DeCosta, her last college start.

I had forgotten what a brutal season that was for Colby. Only seven goals scored for, and a whopping 237 against. Yikes. Lucky they didn't drop hockey altogether after a season like that.
