BTW, should I really ask or just assume that Lake Placid is Olympic sized ice?
It's actually a triangle.

You all misunderstood ... the final is going to be played as a water-polo match in an olympic-sized swimming pool

Would it be wrong of me to hope that you don't know how to swim?

I don't even know what to say to that.
Other than 'go Saints' of course.
Anyways....hockey talk.......
What do we all think of Baskin getting substantial time on the PP? I'm not too sure about it myself....she had one great opportunity set up by allie on sat., but other than that she's not really the playmaking type. She's quick and does her job on the 3rd line well but to have her play on the PP when we have 6 top-class forwards is a bit silly IMO

Stopping short of flipping the bird this time?

Baskin reminds me of Joe Rooney. She does most things very solidly but has a scoring disability. Hopefully she can shake that soon.

With their tenacity it surprises me that we don't see Baskin and/or Wiedmeier on the PK more often. Although I have to admit, I dig the way Mutch approaches the PK, all 1980s-LA Kings style: he puts out his two best attackers in Stack and Thunstrom andf says "F U, you're going to have to worry about defense even when on the powerplay." It's worked pretty well for us as we've gotten SHGs aplenty and it seems like our PK stats are solid as well.

Wasn't refering to you, rather to Joe who did indeed flip us the bird at the Whitt during the PC game (I believe it was Joe, one wearing the hat in the middle). When you guys showed up to cheer against BU you argued to the death that it was justified, when we cheer against BC we get told to go [expletive] ourselves. Who's classless? BTW, I was joking with the swimming comment, I wouldn't wish death upon my worst enemy and that comment was clearly over the line, so if you are looking for an apology you have it.

The difference being, I never swore at or razzed any BU fans personally - or acted like a d-bag to them before the game when they were just trying to have a friendly conversation. (Nor would I ever: every true BUWH supporter I know is a great guy and terrific supporter of the game - any cheering I do against BU on the WOMEN's side at least, is certainly not mean-spirited.)
The apology is accepted, but I'm not sure it's the only apology you owe.

Yes, it was joe with the bird (sorry joe, but it's the truth)
Can't we all just fight this out in a parking lot somewhere? It would be so much easier and clutter this thread less.
Joe, I agree that Baskin is more suited to the PK than the PP by far, but Wiedmeier? She is a tenacious player for sure but I think (and I think you know too) that that would result in a few more 5 on 3s. For that reason I think Zavisza isn't really suited to the PK either. I think Spillane/McDonald and Fardelmann/Thunstrom would be the perfect pairings with Baskin standing in if it were one of those 4 in the box.

That's true, and that's probably the reason why she gets little or no PK time. She is a solid defender, after all - the opposition has only scored twice this season when she was on the ice. She definitely does her job - although her role has been diminished in the past few weeks as Mutch had looked to tinker w/ the bottom lines.

And Mike, as for this 'feud'- it's pretty stupid. In a nutshell, Grant & I went to visit the 'Litterbox' between periods of the regular season game between BC and UNH to have some friendly conversation with the UNH supporters. Apparently during that time, I made an offhand remark about how I expected that there would be more fans in 'the Litterbox,' as I had been given a romanticized view of it. Cloud9 and Cloud9 alone took this as some sort of personal affront, and he's had a serious and troubling personal vendetta against the two of us since then. It's pretty dumb, really, and it's a shame, because if it weren't for this clown, and a few of his a-hole cohorts, I'd be able to find it in my heart to root for UNH to win a national title for Hockey East and their large number of classy and outstanding fans. But no. Go Saints.

Mutch has been using some of his top 6 forwards on the point during the PP. Early in the season he actually went with five forwards on the ice as one PP unit. He's had Stack and McDonald playing the point at different times this season. Last weekend he had Spillane at the point. He has been trying Baskin and Wright (I think) on the 2nd PP unit when Spillane or another forward plays the point.
I confess to having an obvious bias here but this is where they especially miss Keever, on the PP.

I'm not a fan of overloading the ice with forwards; Mutch seems to be, though, and I don't really get it. I get using Spillane at the point on the PP - she has a good shot when she's not afraid to let it go, she can go down into the corner, and she distributes well because she's a very poised player. Beyond that, I don't like doing it - especially since we have such a great possession defenseman in Taverna who can hold it in the zone, shoot, and carry it in deep if necessary.
I thought it was a very poor decision to go with all 6 star forwards on the ice in the last minute on Sat. with the goalie pulled. Spillane was the only one capable of 'playing the point' and setting up the play. You need someone back at the blue line to hold it in since the other team will be focused on dumping it out in that situation. Stuart or Taverna would have fit the bill. Stack, Thunstrom, Fardelmann, Zavisza and McDonald are all great players but they don't really serve that function.

When you have your goalie pulled, everyone on the ice has to be quick, aggressive and desperate. Ideally you want to get the puck deep in the opponent's end, pull your goalie off the ice and get the sixth attacker on, get the puck back to the point and put a shot on goal and then scrap for rebounds. Above all you have to outnumber the opposition on loose pucks and then once you have the puck, spread the ice with good passing. It's hard because you don't get to practice too much with six skaters and the other team is just trying to deny access to the offensive zone.
The women's game makes it especially difficult since few players possess the big booming slap shot at the point to back off defenders.
Baskin can make good plays and she's not afraid to go to the net. She is a good player given the opportunity she can come up with some important goals.
