What's happening with Tyler Hirsch (no lame comments about past behavior, please)?

According to the journaltimes.com "The Gophers played without leading scorer Tyler Hirsch, who was held out by Lucia for "falling behind in some classes." Lucia said Hirsch will also sit out Sunday, but he hopes to put him back in the lineup next week."

So was his not playing imposed by the University or just the coach?

Lucia imposed it, not the University... I believe Lucia said that they want to correct the issue now and not risk losing him for the year (ie. get the classwork caught up instead of failing the class later)

You're lucky you got a decent response. UND fans asked the same question, wondering how Hirsch was doing and all we got was comments like "I hope Bina has learned how to skate better so that he doesn't fall against the boards" and so on.

In any case, I hope Hirsch gets that work done. He's had an unbelievable season thus far, in my opinion. I didn't think he'd have THIS MUCH of an impact.

In algebra 001.5, maybe Hircsh ran into the white board and then laid his calculator down at center class. Automatic suspension.

Thanks for the response & congrats on becoming a father on July 11th.

I was concerned about the types of responses I get, but thankfully there have only been a couple immature ones.

I think the Gophers really missed him against the Badgers this past weekend even though they managed to sweep them.

Actually it was in the paper that he was out for school reasons.
I would hope he does get his studies done so he can come back.

The question was asked at ss.com, many comments about Hirsch there were deragatory, and the classless Bina retort (which made me cringe myself) came from one Gopher fan. Just sayin. :)

Slap shot you a little fiesty this morning? :) Your team looked pretty good dismantling the BADgers last night. Elliot held them in, maybe he should sue for non-support. Sunday night hockey, has a nice ring to it. Too bad the bad guys won. :)

Im curious about the exact circumstances of this. Do any of you know if he has had academic troubles in the past or has a history of not performing exceptionally well in the classroom, but usually passing or just a case of a annomalous incident? I wonder if between hockey and doing everything that needs to be done to keep him on the even keel and stable if the academic portion got put on the back burner.

I guess I didn't see the derogatory posts. All I saw was someone asked how Hirsch was doing and the next thing I knew State of Hockey was there saying how Bina should learn how to skate better.

Like it or not, Hirsch is going to be the focal point of many a fan, including those who are not a fan of the Gophers. You don't think people would simply shrug and set it aside, do you? Especially the Sioux fans. I mean, it's not like you guys shrugged regarding Bochenski's past and Brandt's past (at the very least). We had to listen to that drivel the entire time Bochenski was a Sioux and the remainder or Brandt's time at UND after his debacle. Yes, this stuff with Hirsch will blow over and hopefully all fans will stop making a big deal about Hirsch's past, but there are going to be periodic jabs at Tyler. You'll just have to come to grips with that. And it is the few fans of other fan bases that have brought it on because, yes, apparently grudges do hold up over time on these message boards. Just ask Happy.

Yep, your right, they didn't cut him any slack did they.

Precisely. With all the stuff this kid has been through, let's just let him cope.

redwing - that was a pretty longwinded and rather irrelevent reply. ;) All I said was that only one Gopher fan made that classless comment about Bina, while your post implied (intentional or not) that it was more widespread. I will not attempt to rationalize nor defend such a comment from any fan, even one that supports the Gophers.

btw, you also shouldn't pretend the original comment about Hirsch was sincere: "Hey, how's Tyler Hirsch these days?" :p

I don't think I have ever made fun of an injury or a hurt player. I have always considered an athletes off ice antics to be fair game. Stealing, DWI, punching out a cop, underage drinking, going to a worse school, etc are stuff people should be ashamed of, so I like to pile it on. Tyler Hirsch, I have no idea what his problem is, but I guess if you are the type of person that made fun of the kids riding the short bus, you should pile right on this wagon. I certainly have no standing to tell people to lay off, so I wouldn't even try.

I am sure some players need more coaching than others when it comes to off the ice stuff. I wonder if what we see this year is Don taking a shorter leash with a very young and talanted team. He had no problems taking action with Briggs right out of the gates. Last year had to be disappointing with the whole blarney thing and the early exit from the tourney says the team had some issues focusing on the task at hand.
