View Full Version : Bulldogs at Gophers 11/3 11/4
I swear that "joke" reminds of me playing SIMS when you build a wall around a player and watch them starve to death.
The preview from the site of the underdog: ...Are you sure we're the underdog? I think UMD only has 3 seniors on D, 3 at F, and 1 in net, so in Shannon speak, that must make them awfully young. Plus, we've heard plenty of times just how tough (and noble) it is to take a team of international all-stars from like 82 different countries and get them to communicate with each other. Apparently, that slapping of your stick against the ice to call for the puck doesn't translate well. Forget the records, discard the stats -- I'm sure we are the favorite, because everybody on our team chose the easy route of going to Minnesota rather than doing something honorable like crossing an ocean for an education that can only be found in Duluth. (plus we invented the game, so that's gotta be a big advantage right there)
I'm sure that the young pups will be happy to return to Duluth with a couple of respectable losses and nobody left behind in intensive care due to the lethal combination of the Minnesota goons and biased refs. With that minute budget they have up there, I'm not sure they can even afford the hospitalization if it comes to that. Maybe Bemidji can dip into their deep coffers to help them out.

Don't forget that the only way the Gophers can beat the Dogs is if they beat themselves. The Gophers are nowhere near the talent lever of the Bulldogs.
Someone (Canadian I believe, but not sure)who didn't leave a "name" other than anonymous left a blog comment today with this article http://www.mississauga.com/mi/sports/story/3755567p-4342380c.html that mentions the Mississauga Aeros advertising Kim Martin for Team Sweden against the Aeros in a tuneup for Sweden for the Four Nations Cup this week.
While it won't affect UMD at all because of having Riitta, it may means that Martin will play Friday night in Minneapolis rather than Saturday like she has been in the rotation.
It's not that big a deal, but was brought to my attention anyway. Riitta has the obvious ability to play both games anyway if Martin is gone for the weekend. UMD will be just fine this weekend either way, and as mentioned in the WCHA week thread, sweep at Ridder.

I'm sad that I wont be able to see the womens game in the cities this year. Last year a small contingent of us made it down there for the saturday game (http://www.collegehockeystats.net/0506/boxes/wminmnd1.o29) in case anyone forgot :) . It will be a very interesting series, it will be UMD's first real test of the season after blowing past the first few oponents. I havent forgotten the dribbler that snuck past Schaublin to end our WCHA run last year, and Im sure the team hasnt either. Dogs win two very close games. As for the men, I'm hoping for a win, either way itll be two very fun games
Watch out for deer, anyone that's going south for the series at Ridder. I counted 12 deer already I've seen this week crossing different roads and highways. TO think the hunters aren't even firing guns out there yet and their already moving.
Also saw 5 deer by the Cloquet hockey shelter's "olympic drive" that I didn't add to my count.
I don't hunt, but I do say it's a GOOD thing.. they're so overpopulated it's not funny the number of car/deer accidents.

Counted six crossing my path while driving around in the wee hours one night last week...one appeared to be a monster buck.
They're out there, and they're stupid...or is it crazed?
By the way.. a scientific study finally found those stupid little plastic deer sirens people have been buying for years.. don't do any good.. deer can't hear them anyway. They dont' her ultrasonic sounds so they're pointless. I figured years ago they don't work, as I've always seen deer when going on hockey watching trips to St. Cloud etc and they don't do anything different than going on the same trip in a car without them "sirens"
Ok.. that said.. back to HOCKEY stuff :) This thread so much easier to take than the Men's thread for the weekend.. 3 messages and I gave up making sense of it.

Very interesting. Do men still play hockey?
News Tribune preview of the weekend..
http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/articles/index.cfm?id=27489§ion=sports
A little surprised at the shortness of the "article" if you can call it that.. it's more like a memo. No mention of Martin and Team Sweden so that Canadian article may have been wrong, or Team Sweden expected her to be there for their tuneup game.
Lanzl is "out indefinitely" so that's 3 players (Jubinville and Hough) who there's really no real update on their status. Out indefinitely could mean, back Saturday, but I hope not after the reports from St. Cloud. A couple weeks off would be good even once she feels good.
While I'm at it.. the Pioneer Press (http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/sports/15915938.htm) preview.
Addition:
As No. 8-ranked Minnesota prepares to play host to No. 4-ranked Minnesota-Duluth tonight and Saturday night at Ridder Arena, the top 18 scorers in women's college hockey are from outside Minnesota.
UMD (8-0-0) has five of the top 18, led by 13 points apiece from Saara Tuominen of Finland, Emmanuelle Blais of Canada and Jessica Koizumi of Simi Valley, Calif.
While that's true, I had to read it a few times because the way it's phrased I read from schools outside Minnesota.
Ouch.. the only update I got during the men's game was 3-3 score in the beginning of the 3rd tonight.... Kim Martin started I see, so maybe the News Tribune just wasn't enlightened on Martin playing for Team Sweden Saturday? I had expected Riitta to start tonight of course but I guess we'll see if Martin's on the bench tomorrow or if she heads to Canada early since UMD's off next week
UMD was more than doubled up on shots? Missing Lanzl and not having Jubinville and Hough looks like it finally showed.
Anyway, round 1 to Goofers, round 2 Saturday night. (Goofer men won 3-2 here)

A little bit of a slow start for the Gophs tonight. Not really skating like they can, and need to. Came out with much improved skating and zip in the 2nd to get back in it. Must have been some "inspiration" in the locker room during the 1st intermission...worked, whatever it was. Finally got a couple good bounces around the net with loose pucks landing on the sticks at the opportune moment...but those breaks were created by some hard work. Outstanding effort from Graft & Philipczyk tonight as noted with 2nd / 3rd stars. Bobbi Ross a very fitting 1st star with a couple big goals. Nice job fighting back from two goals down.
Bulldogs are a quick, fine skating team and will be out / hellbent for the equalizer tomorrow night I'm sure. I'd never have expected scoring 5 on Martin.
Fine efforts from Nichols, Wacker & Francis tonight as well.
I should know better than picking a sweep.. but being the homer I am.. I had to :)

I think the Gophers were "slow out of the gate" on Friday night because Ross and Blankenship were both benched for the first period, discipline for some infraction in Ohio. Once the team was all on the ice in the 2nd period, they were much more effective. And even in that first period, UMD never led by more than 1 or 2 shots, while in the first couple of minutes of the second period, the Gophers pulled away in shots and never looked back. Goaltending is a big issue for the Gophers right now—Chartier looked better than this last year.
The Bulldogs looked good too—tough and fast, really communicating well on the ice, I thought. Martin is a huge asset to them, and the difference in goaltending is what made the game even as close as it was. The shots were 39-17 at the end of the game.

The Gophersports website has several important details wrong and the Pioneer Press and Strib both omit the most important detail of the game. The Bulldog website gives only a Bulldog perspective.
Ross, Blankenship and Zebro sat out the first period. They dressed, warmed up, and sat. The reason for the apparent disciplinary action has not been publicly announced.
With the Gophers fourth line seeing their most extensive action since opening weekend, the first period was still relatively close. Minnesota had more shots but Duluth had the better chances and capitalized on two. The first goal was the end result of a well executed passing play with the extra player advantage, a tap in at the back post with Chartier nowhere near. The second goal, a rocket to the top corner over Chartier's glove, was a beauty.
With Duluth up 2-0, the Gopher first line of Marvin, McKenzie, and Francis opened the second period with an uncharacteristically long shift, over a minute. Finally a change was made and Ross touched the ice for the first time, over 21 minutes into the game. She jumped on, corralled the puck at mid-ice, turned the corner and drove in from Martin's left to score unassisted on her first touch of the game.
The heart and soul of the Gopher team in that instant turned the tide of the game and although Duluth still had many strong shifts, they never again for an extended period looked to be a likely winner on this night.
Despite giving up 5 goals and taking the loss, Martin was stellar in goal. She absolutely stuffed a Blankenship-Ross 2 on zero during the second period when the game was still in the balance. At the other end, despite giving up 3 goals on 17 shots, Chartier was also very solid. Her best save was a glove hand deflection on a top shelf aimed bullet in the first but her positional play was very good throughout.
The two player advantage for Duluth came at the end of the second period, not the first as reported by Gophersports. It was 3-3 at the time and Duluth had its last best chance to turn the game back to their column. The Gophers sent out Ross as their defensive forward and survived the storm at the end of the second. With 9 seconds still remaining on the first penalty and 1:07 on the second, Minnesota opened the third period with both Ross and Marvin on the ice. Souba jumped back on at 9 seconds and the Bulldogs never seriously threatened through the rest of the power play.
The Gophers took another penalty shortly after the 4 minute mark. Off the ensuing face-off the puck was chipped ahead to Ross on the left wing boards at center ice. She repeated her earlier move by turning the defensive corner and came in alone on Martin, this time from goal right. She crossed in front and Martin was unable to make the save. The Gophers had the lead which they made stand up for the win.
On Friday night the Gophers were the better team. They play again on Saturday.
I missed the game helping a friend down here. Is this indicative of what is to come, my friends back in Duluth were pretty high on the team this year. First real test for UMD and I'm not sure they responded. Off course Shannon makes a good point in DNT that a 2 goal lead is the worst in hockey. But even with that tieing it up at 3 and then not producing and giving up a Shorty. I am hoping my alma mattre can do a little more tonight.
I see the Drazen kid that transferred to Minnie made the 4 Nations team, how much does that hurt UMD. Was she the real deal? Nobody from UMD on the CA or US roster.
I am interested to see how next weekend goes with it appears 4 or 5 players gone when we play MNMKT.

She's an excellent D and definitely the real deal IMO, a player no team would want to lose. Glad to hear she made the US roster. I'm very much looking forward to her being on the blueline next season...and holding out hope for the return of another top notch defender.

Noticed this, much to my bewilderment. I was very happy to see them back on the ice. They certainly had an impact...a big impact on the outcome.

UMD is off next weekend and then plays Mankato the weekend of the 17th, the Christmas City of the North parade weekend. Hopefully the 2 weeks until the next game (after tonight of course) get this team healthy.
For whatever reason, the News Tribune didn't get EITHER the women's OR men's game stories online... I guess I'll have to buy a newspaper now
