Easton Shootout Sat. 10/07
Maine vs. Bemidji State 4:05 CT Easton Shootout (Minneapolis, MN)
New Hampshire at Minnesota 7:05 CT Easton Shootout (Minneapolis, MN) #'s 2 & 5 on the smaller sheet this time around.
Getting started this weekend. Post any thoughts or expectations.
In WCHA action, I'm going with Bulldog and Badger sweeps. Wouldn't mind being wrong on both counts.

I'm hoping that Natalie Darwitz doesn't show up in the uniform of an opponent this weekend.

That would be good. I'm hoping Minnesota is focused on their first game...first.
I predict a win for Maine in both games.
You predict what? That's more guts than I have with the UMTC crowd here  :D

Anyone have any information concerning the Easton Shootout absence from the bench (and the ice) of Kim Hanlon?
Kim was on crutches throughout the weekend. Apparently, she is still having trouble with the ankle she injured in the WCHA final in March. I heard that she will not return to action for a minimum of several more weeks.

Did anyone else notice that Bruce Brothers was actually at the game? And based on his story in the Pioneer Press it appears that he interviewed Kelli Blankenship and others after the game.
Maturi also made one of his infrequent appearances.
Brothers notes that "Gophers goalie Brittony Chartrier struggled with consistency". I suspect that the most disappointed person is probably Brittony. She has played much better on many occasions in the past and I am sure she expects to play much better on many occasions in the future.
And attendance of 1,139. I know it is only the first week of October but that is a disappointing crowd for #2 against #3 in the self proclaimed State of Hockey.
I am confident that better things are coming this season, both in attendance in the play of Brittony Chartrier.

That's unfortunate, I saw her last summer without crutches so I wonder if this is new or did she aggrevate the old injury.
Only seeing the game on the USCHO feed, Chartier didn't look *that* bad. The goal from the blue line yes, but otherwise her defense didn't seem to help her that often.
The goal from the blue line yes ...Which one? By my count, there were three, although 1 did hit a shoulder, another was just sniped (but she was on her knees as a clear shot from the blueline went topshelf), and the 3rd was through a screen. She couldn't do much on goal #1 which went in off a D's skate. And 2 more were breakaways. But Bourdon stopped a few breaks on the other end. It gets to the point where your team needs you to make a big save. Part of a goalie's job description is covering for other people's mistakes.

Watching the feed, versus live, I thought both goalies looked shaky at times.
Both teams also had some misfires which looked threatening and could've takent the score higher. I thought the Gophers 4th goal was very weak on Bourdon's part- a harmless puck from behind the net that she couldn't control and then let slip between her legs. Ugggh.
Personally, I'd imagine both teams will make defensive improvements as they move forward. With a healthy Hanlon Minnesota's defense might look a whole lot better. Maybe the most interesting outcome of the weekend for the Wildcats was the play of their freshman goaltender Schoedel- if she can challenge it will make UNH a much better team.
I believe the goal I'm referring two was a 2nd period wrist shot.. I was fiddling with the size of media player trying to find the puck. It was a good feed but there were a lot of puck shadows and stuff.
The goal when Maunu got turned around by the puck carrier I thought was a nice goal even though she probably should have stood up the player?
It was really hard to notice which player was which on the feed of course, but I think Maunu's going to take a few weeks to learn to play a more defensive style of defense again. She's used to having to bring the puck down to the blue line herself. I'm sure it'll come fast though.
Who's the moron that made the schedules this year anyway? The Dogs women's series with the Gophers down there is November 3rd/4th and the Men's series with the Gophers up HERE is the same weekend. So much for getting down there to see the series this year. (First time I've checked the dates... schedule sucks.)

A source in the local media reports that Hanlon had surgery on her ankle and will be out 6 weeks.
I thought both goalies looked shaky at times. That is the key -- both teams will need better play in net to achieve their ultimate goals.

U loses overtime 'heartbreaker' NEW HAMPSHIRE 6, GOPHERS 5. The University of Minnesota women's hockey tradition of putting outstanding offensive talent on display has received a booster shot this season from freshman Kelli Blankenship, a 19-year-old originally from Miami, Fla., who was introduced to the sport on inline skates.

I believe the goal I'm referring two was a 2nd period wrist shot..That was the one that hit a defender high and wound up in the top left corner. So it was deflected and she was screened, but that was only the 4th SOG and goal #3. It has to be a confidence boost for any team if they know there is a good chance that any shot could go in.
I think Maunu's going to take a few weeks to learn to play a more defensive style of defense again. Most of the young D that I have watched make a big improvement somewhere between the end of the freshman and middle of the sophomore season. It takes a while to get all of the systems figured out and adjust to the fact that everything is happening much faster than in HS, so there will be mistakes. What the Gophers need in the short term is less mistakes from the D who have more experience (although even they are accustomed to being paired with an older D partner.)

Where did you see this at? That's a bad break if that's the case.

How did you like Kelli Blankenship's game........I've been watching her play since she was 9, and figured she's make a dent quickly up there!
