Word is that Sarah Feldman left Boston College just this week. Kind of a late decision, wonder if anyone will be able to pick her up before the year starts. Best of luck to her

How do you know this is true? Why would Sarah leave BC? I know they have many new freshman coming this season, but she was a big part of the team the past two years.

When players leave a team/school and transfer to another school, are they eligible to get scholarship money from the school they are transfering to. (assuming they are going to a non Ivy, of course). Are there any type of penalties for kids who transfer? I'm just curious, because it seems like it's getting more and more common for girls to switch schools.

In Strassman's case since this is her second transfer there would be a penalty if she plans to keep on playing. She would have to sit out a year. The first transfer is w/out penalty. One other complication I am not totally sure of all the nuances of Ivy league sports but at the very least they are not keen on 5th years so she would be losing a year of eligiblity by going back to Brown rather then say go to another Hockey East school where she would have the right to a 5th year. I think it sounds like she is done playing college hockey by her own chosing.
As far as say Feldman, got to agree this is complicated by the late date. To talk to other schools she has to get a release from BC. Recently a Northeastern men's basketball player (and there are several other examples in the past off season in that sport) wanted to follow his coach from NU to Duquense They gave him a fairly hard time to do it before allowing it. BU had a basketball player, a kid named Hassan, who at this late date also announced he wanted to transfer and the coach played real hard ball with him. He would not let him talk with schools that would be a step up, instead he took a step down. All this and in men's bb you are required to sit a year...a rather one sided procedure.
Technically if she clears that hurdle she would be able to get a scholarship (if some school has one available at this late date) and to play this season. If she has somewhere specifically in mind she just might be willing to take the year off and wait being part of that school's class of '07 recruiting class.

I am not sure of this but didn't Strassman play at Brown originally before she transferrred to BC...would her return to Brown, her original playing school, constitute a second transfer and make her ineligible to play this year? just wondering...you seem to be up on the rule...

Thanks for the info cavbim. So should she decide to take the year off to be a part of the '07 recruiting class, she could be eligible for a full scholarship, just like an incoming freshman would be? (assuming the coach wants her badly enough).

I think you could appeal....ask a UNH fan to recount the whole Eddie Caron story I thought he was going to appeal having to sit but he never did play at Yale so its slightly different.

Does anyone know about Eddie Caron at UNH?

Yeah, that was an interesting one to sit back and watch as a fan.
He played at UNH, then decided to transfer to Yale for the education (Eddie always excelled in the classroom), transfered, sat out and practiced with the team and then decided half way through the year that he wanted to come back to UNH, appealed to the NCAA and they said he wouldn't have to wait an additional year as he did not play with the team, only practiced. Played one more year at UNH and then left to go pro, didn't work out and he's actually back at UNH taking classes.

There must be a very good reason why Sarah would leave BC. Does anyone know why? It is also a bit strange Strassman left at the same time. Why not in the spring? I wish both of them well, but it seems they will have to sit out a year being as it is so close to the start of the season.

Coach didn't feel the same way

How can you say the this was a coach's decision? Sarah had 28 points her freshman year, (first on the team) 32 points her sophmore year, (third on the team) +19 tied for first on the team with Spillane. BC can't afford to loose a player like Feldman.

I didn't say it was a coaches decision,
I only said he didn't feel the same as you did about Sarah being a big part of the team.

Ok, so the team has not started yet, they haven't hit the ice. How can a decision be made now and not at the end of last season? Stats may not tell the whole picture regarding a player but when you look at BC as a whole Sarah has 2 years of college experience and led the team her Freshman year and was third her sophmore year with only a few point seperating the top 3 players. How can a coach not think much of Sarah? Go back in the archives and read what has been said about Sarah by the Coach. I watched Sarah play back when she played for Tabor and she was a top recruited player. This makes very little sense to me.

Life isn't entirely hockey related...just a thought. Good luck to all college students figuring out life!

I couldn't agree more. If Sarah is staying at BC and not playing hockey than I understand entirely. If she is unhappy and trying to find a better team situation to fit her needs and a different school I understand entirely. It is just a strange parting of ways considering the history.

It could have little to do with on ice results and more to do with philosophy. She may be in a major that she feels requires more attention to studies, and the coach may require a higher degree of off-ice commitment to the team. Playing D1 athletics in any sport requires an inordinant amount of time to attend to practice, travel, strength and conditioning, and an adjusted academic schedule. If she is a nursing student, and is required to spend time doing clinical labs, you can't blow those off to go on a four day trip to Wisconsin.(Though Carlson managed) Or she may have decided that she personally is not satisfied with her GPA, and wants to achieve something higher, and can only do so by eliminating the single biggest drain on her time, hockey. She may want to go to a school that offers her something more, or something different altogether. Who knows?
I am sure the truth will come out in due time.

Thanks Cloud I could not possibly remember all those details and that is the closest example I could think of.
Assuming the paperwork to get the transfer done it might be ironic on who has money for a scholarship. IF BU has all 18 scholarships allocated now, Durocher seems to be working more to keeping the classes balanced so he most likely has the ones he plans to give to the '08 recruiting class in his bag and Feldman is an '08 grad. I thought I had heard Durocher had taken Poulin from Maine (though I never saw it here) so there might be precedent for that. Also possibly Maine might still have money since they have a fairly slim roster and have had several veterans leave and a transfer would help balance the classes.
