Scott Balboni was named today as Head Coach of the Penn State Icers.
Balboni has been an Icer assistant from 1997-99 and 2002-06 and has been an integral part of three ACHA National Championship teams. He succeeds Joe Battista, the winningest coach in Icer history (512-120-27), who assumed the position of Executive Director of the Nittany Lion Club in the office of Development and Alumni Relations at Penn State. In addition to coaching the Icers Balboni will also have marketing responsibilities as the Program/Marketing Coordinator of Ice sports and the Penn State Ice Pavilion.

Balboni is originally from Salem, NH and played his high school hockey at St. Johns Prep school in Danvers, MA where he won a New England Catholic Conference championship in 1992. He was then recruited and played as a full scholarship defenseman for NCAA Division I Providence College from 1992-96. A defensive defenseman, he tallied 13 goals and 41 assists in 138 career games with the Friars. His collegiate career culminated with the Friars beating Boston University and then Maine to capture the Hockey East championship in 1996. He obtained a baccalaureate degree in Business Management from Providence in 1996.

Balboni is well known in collegiate hockey circles and has been a tireless recruiter and outstanding bench coach for Penn State. Balboni is very familiar with the Icers program and hopes to continue the academic and athletic excellence the program currently enjoys. He has also served as Assistant Director of the Penn State Hockey Camps in the past and will serve as Director in the future.

Since returning to State College in 2002 Balboni has been President and Founder of both MAT Realty, LLC a real estate investment company and Nittany Brokerage a full service investment brokerage firm. Balboni has worked for the last 4 years as the Branch Manager building and developing a local insurance agency, Saleme Insurance.

Balboni currently resides in Port Matilda with his wife Mary their two children, AJ 8 and Taylor 4.

Coach Balboni will be introduced to the media at a press conference today at 4:00pm at the Penn State Ice Rink by Meg Handley, Coordinator of Team Sports at Penn State. "The quality of applicants for the job was outstanding and it was Coach Balboni's marketing and business expertise, coaching experience, familiarity with the area and the Icers'
program, that made him the best fit for the Ice Rink and the Ice Hockey Team." according to Handley.

Former Icer Coach Joe Battista commented, "I am very excited for the future of Penn State Hockey under Scott's leadership. When we hired him as an assistant coach in 1997 he brought a new enthusiasm and energy to the team that helped transform the program into a consistent winner that started a stretch of 9 consecutive appearances in the ACHA National Title game. The program is in good hands with Scott at the helm!"

Balboni becomes the 11th coach in Icers History dating back to the first Icer Team in 1939-40.

I always thought the Penn State mascot was the Nittany Lion...

But a good hire. This is a guy who played real college hockey and knows what it takes. Which probably was the biggest reason Batista's record was so good...

I think this could be the demise of PSU.

Do elaborate, scoop. Balboni played real college hockey and probably was the only reason Batista's teams looked good at all. He was the real talent on that coaching staff.

Yes, nevermind the fact that during his four year hiatus from the program (1997-2001) the Icers won 3 ACHA championships and came in 2nd the other time. He must have REALLY been talent on the coaching staff.

Not hating on the guy as I really don't know anything about him, he could be a great coach and I wish him well, but you dont' know *** you're talking about.

Haha, insult my post count and ignore what I had to say. Awww, poor Eddie don't have nothin to say?!?!?!? :p

Did you realize that Balboni was the head recruiter and brought in 90% the players that won those "national championships?"

I also see your knowledge of Penn State hockey seems to be very deep for someone who claims to hate club hockey so vehemently. I have no clue who does Penn State's recruiting, but reading the guy's bio they won 3 championships during the four years he was gone. So he either (a) recruited a class of 25 freshmen that comprised the roster for a full four years while he was off doing other things or (b) you're making stuff up because you have clearly lost this argument.

Maybe he was the real talent on the coaching staff but doesn't mean he can sell to the players what Battista sold. We'll have to wait and see and by the way all of those players that were so called recruited to go there most likely were already on their way I don't beleive Penn State has to recruit all that hard for players.

Club hockey gets a bad rap for these types of moronic fans. It is a level struggling to get respect and yahoo's like this prohibit ACHA from getting the respect it deserves as a great option to play college hockey and get a good education

Get it right: club hockey is NOT college hockey.

You are right...Club hockey is not NCAA HOCKEY. It is a form of college hockey and a pretty good option at that. It is not at the caliber of DI or DIII but you can't argue with the fans, the quality of the organization or the efforts of the people in ACHA hockey. They are making club hockey a great option for players who can't make DIII or don't want to go to a school with only 1000 students.
