Thanks Moose, I've been wondering how the process was moving along and who potential candidates might be. A few people have taken exception in the past when I've suggested both Palmquist and Sertich as solid candidates to move to the collegiate level from their positions as successful HS coaches. Yes, it's a whole 'nother ballgame but Sertich coached teams have always impressed me. Always a strong cohesive team effort from his players. If given the opportunity, along with some players I think he's capable of success in D-I.

So the current interm coaches don't even get a sniff. Ingman and Paulsen would stay on as assistants? Geisen has a year left on his contract at SCSU. Is he a finalist for that job as well? This will be interesting to see how everything works out.

Good Luck Bemidji did you just not have any quality A listers that applied or were they just not from the mid-west.
Prolly be helpful to know just who / how many threw their names in the hat from the start to answer this question...or was this a statement?
And Giesen wasn't being looked at for the SCSU position I take it?

I would think it must be hard for Bemidji to get a lot of qualified people interested in moving there. I'm sure it's a great place to visit though.

BSU announced today that Steve Sertich (http://info.bemidjistate.edu/sports/sports/whockey/news/2006-07/20060526-SertichHire.html) will be the new Women's Hockey Coach...

At least it wasn't Lohrei!
Of course my thought would be Sertich is a good pick regardless of who the other candidates were.

Sertich will be the missing link that will move the Beavers to the next level. Great choice!!

Don't forget that Bruce Olson was a great high school coach as well and a good player in college...

Big difference though: Sertich was a very good HS GIRLS Hockey coach too, something that, to my knowledge, Mr. Olson was not. Two-similar, but very different games.
Looks like a good pick to me! The only question remaining is who is going ot take our spot after we leave the WCHA Basement!??!?! :)

I should have added that you can have a great coach, but if you can't recruit because you have no money to offer, a terrible arena to play in, and the history of being a losing program, it's going to make it hard to win in the WCHA.

can't recruit - we have a great recruiting class coming in
no money to offer - you dont know what you are talking about.
terrible arena - I've seen worse
history of being a losing program - losing would be in the basement, pretty sure we weren't in the basement

St. Cloud has a great class, as does Minnesota, Minnesota State, Wisconsin, and pretty much everybody else. Saying you have a great class doesn't mean you have a great class. I'll wait to see if it's a great class once the puck drops.
I don't know what I'm talking about eh? I do have some inside sources on the program. I know how many scholarships are handed out and it's about a line short of the rest of the WCHA. If the men played in the WCHA with the same amount of scholarships, they'd have a similar record.
What other arenas in the WCHA are worse than the John Glas? Maybe Mankato or Ohio State....That's a big maybe!
No Bemidji hasn't finished in the basement of the WCHA, but they've always been close to there. They have never had a winning season...

I cant say we have a great class comming in, I'll go as far as saying a good class.
For whatever we are getting though, I feel like we are losing more via graduation. I don't think last year's incomming class was that great either. Brooke Collins is waaaaaaay overrated.

Maybe we should give Bemidji a little break and see what Sertich can do with the program. Last time I checked the Bemidji/Walker are wasn't a booming, financial metropolis nor do they have one close. Unlike the other WCHA teams they are kind of stuck out in the middle of no where. If I saw correctly on another board funding got passed to start a new arena and that is a step in the right direction.

Heh, did I say anything against the incoming St. Cloud or Mankato freshman? ...no, I guess what I said is that Bemidji has a great incoming class of freshman. The fact is... I'm not competing or comparing, I'm saying that Bemidji incoming freshman are a great recruiting class.
Arenas - I'm not impressed with Mankato at all. You can't see both ends unless your in the middle of the arena. Not sure about Ohio but since you mentioned it. I'm guessing you don't like it, I'm only saying Bemidji is not the worse. Bemidji is not the DECC, but actually it's a really comfortable viewing arena.
And Bemidji is not in the basement - My point was Bemidji moved up a notch this year, beat teams, they weren't supposed to beat, and genuinely had a great team bonding year after December. But I guess your "inside sources" probably told you that.
