From some coach's I know, the real money is in the camps they run in the summer. Tenure, success of program, school endowment and support of the alumni are factors.

Check the UVM jobsite under athletics and click on Women's Head Coach job posting....UVM is serious about their Women's Hockey Program starting now...

That money does not exist at the DIII level, I would guess that some teams budgets are in that range (70,000 - 130,000)

The listing for St. Olaf is for $35,000. Someone earlier said it right. The money is in the camps.

A friend of mine who is a D1 assistant in her first year of coaching a D1 team is making just over 40K.

Dan Laughlin at UWS made a little over 15K for the 04-05 season...can't find anyting about 05-06 yet. Stauber on the mens side made 21K as coach and 30K as the Director of Wessman or Marketing or whatever BS job they gave him to make hima full time employee.

I'm not sure if this is just UWS or alot of other D3 schools...but the coaches are half time employees or less than that. But a lot of the big coaches men's hockey, basketball, soccer (y we have soccer still puzzles me..we have snow on the ground by the time the season is over) are given other positions and some teaching positions in the Health and Human Performance Department. UWS just hired new basketball coaches and I believe one of the requirements was a master's degree so t hey would be able to teach classes on campus. I think they do this so that they can pay the coaches less but make up for it by giving them other salaries to make it worthwile. But for coaches like laughlin...it doesn't do him much good as i am pretty sure he just coaches and thats it.

Laughlin also works within the sports info department... right now he is in charge of the baseball and softball games... he does the same thing in the fall when he does m/w soccer, volleyball, and cc.

right now the coaches i can think of that are full time with just coaching are chris perez for soccer, paul nisius for cc/track and roger plachta for softball/ golf. everyone else either teaches (vito) or has other duties (diedrick, asst. AD)

oh... and soccer is there so you have something to complain about within the department... just like the lack of football  :D

at least soccer is a hell of a lot cheaper than football is....unless those shin pads are more expensive then they look :)

I read an article last year about women coaches and their salaries and I think Katey Stone was quoted as saying she was on the low end of the payscale and only recently was bumped up to where she is competitive with other coaches in D-1.

I don't remember if there were specific numbers listed but the figure $30k sticks in my mind for some reason.

Harvard is ALWAYS on the low-end of the payscale. Sports, Academics, custodians, librarians, fund managers, whatever. That said, no way Katey Stone makes 30K now. That might have been a reference to when she took the job in 1994, because back then it was only a part-time position.

Of course on the UMD thread it was just announced that Miller has re-upped for 4 years at $130k per. Not bad. All smiles for Shannon.

Low end? What the heck do they spend their endowment earnings on?

I didn't say that Katey Stone made $30k now. I said that the figure stuck in my mind as one that was possibly quoted in the article. I think it has only been recently that she has gotten a bump in salary. I say this because Katey was quoted as saying that she now makes enough to afford a bigger place to live.

I know about Harvard's payscale because I had a parent who taught there for 33 years. The salary was atrocious but the bennies were/are great.

Try http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/Search.asp for information on institutional spending on athletics including coaches salaries. This site gives the overall spending as well as the spending average per team and gives the total of players listed. I.E. # of players= 24; Team spending= $143,000 or whatever it is.
