Gib, explanation for those of us who are watching on Gamecast?
Williams got called out on strikes, his 3rd K of the game, and the 2nd called strikeout and he didn't agree with either of them so on the way back, he tossed his helmet pretty much right at the umpire, though he didn't hit him.

Man, it sucks that the Sox had to take Lowell to get Beckett... :)

It looks like a pretty good pitch on BBTN... if it didn't catch the outside corner, it should have been close.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Bernie suspended after that stunt.
If Young got 50 games for the bat incident, Williams should pick up at least a couple games since it was in the Ump's direction.

And it looked like the helmet would have hit the ump, had he not been watching Williams toss it.

but it's bernie baseball, aka arthur the aardvark
i doubt he'll get suspended.
nice start by the ostrich too.
Looked to me like Bernie had a legit gripe on the first called strikeout also. Whether the call was correct or not, it took the ump way too long to call it.
He flipped the helmet backwards, and was not facing the ump. So he was showing up the ump, but it's not clear he was trying to hit him.
I wasn't shocked to see someone blow their cool, but I was very surprised it was Bernie. The last two years have been kinda sad really. He's got no bat speed left, and looked very overmatched on the second strikeout.

Doesn't matter if he was trying to or not. See Young, Delmon.

wouldn't you rather the ump took an extra second to ensure that he made the right call? everything in life doesn't have to be instantaneous, especially if it is done poorly. best ump i've ever seen for wakefield takes an extra second to consider what he saw before making a hasty call, as this ump did on beckett's filthy stuff last night. his 2 was breaking like mad...

exactly. If he doesn't get 5-10 games It'll be ridiculous. It wasn't nearly as bad as Young's incident, but it was stupid and disrespectful.

Bernie deserves one game, tops. i suspect that the helmet bounce was a little more than ANYONE anticipated. Given Williams' history of class and dignity, I would give him the benefit of the doubt.
The umpire was horribly inconsistent for both teams. There was a strike call on Ortiz that was way off the outside of the plate. He had a very strange strike zone. The Yankee's were right in griping about it. I know I was.

just rewatched the vid on ESPN.com.. the umpire tosses him while the helmet is in midflight
p.s. a yankee fan complaining about officiating?

Yes, Bernie has been a classy player his whole career and deserves respect, but when is it okay to throw equipment in the direction of an umpire? if the Umpire wasn't in the motion of throwing him out that hits him in the leg. Was he trying to hit him? I would think probably not, but it doesn't matter. The umpire was horrible, sure, but is that an excuse for throwing anything at him? The umpire, in D. Young's mind was awful (looked like he had a gripe on that strikeout) but that doesn't excuse his reaction.

remember, yankees fans have a lot more class...unless the red sox are kicking their ***
Doesn't matter if he was trying to or not. See Young, Delmon.I don't understand what you're saying. Are you saying that Delmon Young didn't try to hit the umpire? The replays I've seen of the Delmon Young incident don't show Young actually throw that bat. But it clearly hits the umpire, which I really doubt would have happened if he had not tried to hit the umpire.

Look at a replay? With ball/strike calls the two most important things are consistency and decisiveness. If he hesitated after every ball/strike call, then fine. But if he hesitates an unusually long time like that, the players can legitimately think that the umpire considered extraneous, something other than whether the pitch was in the strike zone or not. Like, for example, "The pitcher has had good/bad control to this point." Like "The game's out of hand, and I want to go home." Like "Player X had been yapping about the strike zone, so I'll show him who's boss."

CLS, I was there, Young was not trying to hit the ump, he was flipping the bat back to home plate.

It came into the frame awfully fast to be just "flipping the bat back to home plate". It sure looked to me like he was deliberately throwing it at the ump, based only on the business end of it (the part that's been replayed on TV). And it hit him in full flight.
Contrast with Bernie, who put a high arcing trajectory on the helmet and had it ricochet into the ump on the bounce, and I really don't think there's more than minimal comparison between the incidents.

When Bernie threw that, he knew exactly where he was throwing it. And he certainly knew it could hit the umpire. To me, that's just as bad as throwing it *at* the umpire.
5-10 games.
