Can someone explain the 'option' system to me. I'm unfamiliar with how many a person has, whether its the same across the board, why a guy like Youkilis could be constantly shuttled, but others can't be. Thanks.

Every player has three "option years" where they may be sent to the minor leagues without having to clear outright waivers first. An option year is consumed any time a player on the 40-man roster spends time in the minor leagues, so Delcarmen's option year was already burned when he didn't make the ML roster out of training camp. After five years of service time, a player has to give permission to be optioned to the minors -- it's this window that allows the Red Sox to option Hee Seop Choi to Pawtucket (albeit having to clear major league (revocable) waivers first, which is a formality outside of the August waiver trade period).
A couple of links discussing the matter -- the first gives the incorrect impression that any season on the 40-man roster burns an option year.

The "three season" clock starts once a player has appeared with the big club I assume?
Thanks Craig, much appreciated.
Hottovy is getting touched for his worst outing of the season. Wholly unimpressive at the moment for a 24 year old in the Carolina League, other than a devastating curve that he hasn't been able to use much because he hasn't been ahead in the count much.

The three-season clock starts once he's been placed on the 40-man roster, I believe... I'm not sure if it burns an option year if a team takes a player who's not on either roster and promotes him to the 25-man Major League roster (without subsequently optioning him to the minors).

interesting, thanks Craig.
Hottovy isnt a 'prospect' so much as he had a few good starts. He was in Wilmington last year, and if he was that good, he would be in Portland this season.

Correct.

In that case the team has to "purchase" the player's minor league contract and add him to the 40-man roster before he can play at the ML level, so that would start his option years.

Yeah, I wasnt impressed in the least. Bladergroen showed good power, and good D at first, but it just doesn't seem like he's fully come around from the wrist injury to what he was in the SAL (which, admittedly, is a pretty good hitter's league). Ellsbury is day-to-day, hopefully we'll see him before this series is over. Lowrie is out at least a week, but he's not hitting anyways.

I hope to go to the games in Philly, and catch 1 in Wilmington. Elss and Lowry better be back! I missed Dobies when I went to Greenville last year. Bladergroin was out when I went to Wilmington last year too, so I hope to see him.
(btw, no one noticed that Mientkiewicz was traded for Bladergroen, that's gotta be top name trade of all time)

So the idea is that the transaction sequence is add to 40 in the minors (now an option year), then recall to the majors. The result is eminently sensible (the year is treated the same if he starts in the minors and ends up in the majors, regardless of whether his minor league time was on the 40-man), so I suppose it doesn't exactly matter exactly how you get there.

I'm going to the last Baltimore game next week (Wed) and first Philly game (Fri) and we're contemplating going to a game in Wilmington on Thursday or going to DC for the day and catching a game in Bowie...

yeah, I'm going with a writer from my paper, just for the hell of it, and he decided to do a feature on local red sox fans who follow the sox on the road, so I'll be taking a few shots... not action shots most likely, just feature shots of fans (and the parks).... best part is, now it's a write-off :)

Wow, that's a tough call. She's got a point. Maybe add Iggy Pop as well.
