the pawsox are the best! If they bring up some of these young guys for october, I think they could turn playoff games into one inning games. I mean who would want to face a rotation of Lester/Hansen/Delcarmen/Papelbon in a 7 game series??

don't you mean schilling, beckett and wakefield? i'd take my chances with that trio against johnson, mussina, and ?.

If you haven't seen Papelbon pitch this year than you're definitely selling him short.

it's too bad the sox can't have relievers like tanyon sturtze...

Yeah, but you don't hear any yankee fans talking about turning it into a 5 inning game....

Well, when Hazel Mae gives us the Penthouse spread she owes us, Mikey will have a lifetime of things to say.
Maybe Millar took some pictures he'd be willing to part with...

I'm sure you did back in the days when the Yankees had top-quality relievers bridging to Rivera.

Actually, no, you didn't.

The only time you really heard it was when rivera was the bridge to wettland, and that made it a 6 inning game, not a 5 inning one.

So far in this very young season: Yankee pitching > Red Sox pitching. As for some of these relievers, there's likely a reason they're down in the minors. Let them at least prove themselves before you're talking about 5 inning games...

bingo.

a lights out closer goes in hand in hand with the term 8 inning game. the emergence of the middle reliever in the past 5 years has made some teams have the 7 inning game, especially with free agency and some teams ending up with 2 "closers".

the concept of a 5 inning game is absolutely ludacris, given most teams want their starters to go later. they dont call it five and dive because its a good thing.

not to mention the point above, referring to unproven rookies or guys with astronomical ERAs to be suddenly become lights out against playoff teams. its just hilarious. dont stop though, you fanboys crack me up

Hey man, when Cla Meredith is ready, you better watch out. With him, guys like Remlinger, and Embree in relief, the ALDS is going to be a bunch of -1, -2 inning games. That's right, teams are just going to forfeit games because they're so scared of those guys!

the padres will be looking like geniuses for taking him in the mirabelli deal

I'll believe it when I see it.

You were right about the Bruins dealing Thornton though. Those stupid Sharks - they got hosed.

It was a six inning game in at least '98 and after with Nelson and Stanton before Rivera.

So maybe I'm wishy-washy on one inning here or there... :p

I'm not sure that's such a great example, as the '98 team was one of the top 2 - 3 teams ever. Certainly not the norm, even for a good team. They were just amazing.

The Sox bullpen has been much better this year than last. Papelbon's been better and I like Foulke and Timlin where they are...

Good to see all the Be-Pinstriped Ones fans here. Especially RichS. ;)

It's actually a good example since Torre stuck with the "formula" even when they were blowing teams away in '98.

He stayed with it in later years although in the past 5 he has not had the same quality 'pen so it has not worked as well.

Man, I get WEEI in my driveway in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine- 239 miles from Boston. The only place I cannot get it is usually between Biddeford and Augusta, Maine. Are there weather-related conditions that can explain this?

Speaking of which, I'll get my first look at Tommy Hottovy tonight in Wilimington. Thus far in the season, he's been terrific, and has yet to give up an earned run in three home starts.

Unfortunately, Lowrie and Ellsbury are both on the DL at the moment.

Delcarmen sent down (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2006/05/delcarmen_demot.html). No one called up yet, but possibly lefty Mike Holtz or righty Jermaine Van Buren.

Hadn't they already burned the option year when they called him up?
