WEEI holds onto the Sox (http://business.bostonherald.com/businessNews/view.bg?articleid=138066)
That's too bad. :(

That's too bad. :(Entercom (owner of WEEI and WRKO) won the rights battle. From the reads, it looks like RKO will be the flagship station.

Does this mean that all BC games will now be on EEI?

This Pena guy stinks. Someone explain to me again why we had to trade our (at the time) sixth starter for him?

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic, since he's hitting .333.

I'd still rather have Arroyo, but I'm glad Pena has settled in. He looks relaxed and comfotable up there. Now if Loretta and Varitek can start hitting...

Long term the trade makes sense... I just wish they had dealt Clement instead of Arroyo. For the 2006 season losing Arroyo made no sense to me, and still doesn't. They have 3 legitimate starters currently and they need two more... they traded away that need and it's no secret that pitching is what wins championships. Not a young, solid, hard hitting outfielder.

I just wish they had dealt Clement instead of Arroyo.Arroyo was cheap, Clement wasn't. The FO might have wished they had dealt Clement instead of Arroyo too, but I doubt there was any scenario where it was happening that didn't involve an additional prospect or lots of money.

Pitching may be what wins championships, but not fifth starters, or sixth as Arroyo was at the time. To win championships you need good pitching at the FRONT of the rotation, because once the playoffs roll around, your fifth starter is headed for long relief duty in the bullpen anyways becauase of the days off. If they need another starter to get to the postseason, I think we all know they'll go out and find one. In the meantime, as you said, long term the deal makes sense.

Also, there is talk according to MacAdam and Gammons that the Sox will try Hansen as a starter, not only to potentially fill a need down the line, but also to have him develop all his pitches and, "learn how to pitch." Gammons makes some great points (shocking, huh?) that many/most great closers were starters at some point in their careers, as it helps them to develop more than one or two pitches (the Riveras of the world that can survive like that are few and far between.

They have been having Hansen go 2 - 3 innings quite a bit lately, so that sounds like it might be right.

Also, Rivera was a terrible starter, sent to the bullpen, and then the rest is history. Rivera only has 2 real pitches, one of them being possibly the best cut fastball ever - breaking in on lefties hands at 97 (98 once).

. . .That's quite possibly true, and I think that another reason is that in AA, he was having a lot of 10 pitch innings and blowing batters away with fast balls.

Even if Hansen doesn't become a starter, if he's a one or two inning guy, that could be fine. If he's major league ready at the end of the season, and if Foulke, Timlin, and Papelbon continue to pitch well, then the Sox could turn playoff games into seven, six, or even five inning games. This weekend, there were some encouraging signs from Tavarez, Seanez, and Delcarmen. And before you say, "Yeah, but it was the Orioles," the O's are a pretty decent offensive team. It's their pitching, especially the bullpen, that's the problem.

Yeah, Tavarez didn't give up a homerun today. He and Seanez suck balls.

the pawsox are the best! If they bring up some of these young guys for october, I think they could turn playoff games into one inning games. I mean who would want to face a rotation of Lester/Hansen/Delcarmen/Papelbon in a 7 game series??

Meh. Its either Callahan's right wing BS or Howie "I dream of getting head from Whitey" Carr. Take your pick. :p Plus, RKO doesn't have anything even half as amusing as Mikey Adams and his Hazel Mae infatuation... :D

Well 680 seems to have better coverage, even though they're the same power (50,000 watts). Plus between innings we can switch over and hear Mikey be Mikey.

Well as much as I love hearing Mikey, there always is the chance that he'll run out of material - maybe Hazel will put in a restraining order. :D Who knows? Maybe Jeremy Jacobs will have Dale Arnold "offed" (or he'll run afoul of an angry Joe Thornton) or John Dennis will get hit by lightening or something and Mikey can move to a different time. But its probably in everyone's best interest that he not have 5 hours every night during Red Sox season.

Well, when Hazel Mae gives us the Penthouse spread she owes us, Mikey will have a lifetime of things to say.
