View Full Version : The Official Thread of the 2006 Boston Red Sox
If you want to make a sign about Judas, I think Clemens works better.
I'd say Damon works better. The Sox made more of an effort to bring him back, but he signed with the Yankees. The Sox FO was content to let Clemens walk, and he went to Toronto. The former is worse in my book (though I personally don't have as much animosity towards Damon as the majority of RSN). I don't fault him for the decision, but I could do without all the crap about being "wanted" more by the Yankees. Just admit it was the money and shut up.

True, I guess I mean that Damon did more for RSN. Clemens was always a me-first jerk. He always wanted recognition for what he did. I remember a game where a play was called a hit and he wouldnt take the mound until they changed it to an error.
Damon loved the spotlight, sure, but when it came to baseball he played it the right way. You were never ashamed to have him on your team. He's a professional on the field. Clemens is a jerk on and off the field. I recognize he is an amazing player, but he turned his back on us for more reasons than just money, and I dont welcome him back. Damon got an offer he couldnt refuse, and he took it. Because he was always such a good guy I have a hard time blasting him.
On a side note, looks like the game is delayed to 8:15.

SERIES WIN! 1-0 baby.
Now, does a five-gamer benefit the Sox? I think having five games at home against the Yanks in August can go either way. What do ya'll think?

Sox have August 17 off. Yankees will be somewhere around the middle of a stretch of 21 game in 20 days. That's brutal on a pitching staff. Heck, that's even brutal on your position players.

Anybody think Alex Cora will get an extended look at SS? Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing it.
Cora would probably give you similar offense and somewhat worse defense. The idea that Sean McAdams mentioned is more appealing -- pinch hit for AGon earlier in the game (now that there's finally a halfway decent PH in Mirabelli).

Oh. :o Yeah, swing and a miss there.
I think I remember hearing when ARod and Manny signed their contracts in like 2001 that if Babe Ruth's salary were inflatation adjusted, it's be less than $200,000/year.
http://www.econedlink.org/lessons/print.cfm?lesson=EM604&page=teacher
[Ruth's salary in constant 2005 dollars was about $1 million per year. This is clearly lower than even the average baseball player makes today, and much less than the stars make (Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees is the highest-paid MLB player at $22 million per year). In 2005, 426 MLB players made the same as or more than the great Babe Ruth.]

Is there anyplace that analyzes the salaries in relation to the income of the owners? Players are making a lot more money now, but the teams are, too. I have to wonder if the Babe's salary was proportional to today's stars in terms of the percentage of overall team worth/income/profit.
(Though, none of this actually helps answer kennedy's initial question.)

Now, finally, we really get to see what this Papelbon kid is made of. It wasn't going to go on forever, and now the real test of a closer is how he handles adversity. I already like what I'm hearing.
''I'll think about it a little tonight," Papelbon said. ''I'm not going to ponder losing the ballgame for us. I won't lose sleep over this. That would be stupid. The sun will rise tomorrow."
Does he want the ball soon?
''No doubt about it," he said. ''Best-case scenario is we take the lead, one-run lead, and I save it. I want the ball tomorrow. No doubt about it."

A couple lingering Damon things that I haven't seen listed here:
I take issue with the "good guy" characterization. I recall from the excerpts from "Idiot" where he essentially said that when his child was 18 months old, he wasn't into being a parent and basically wanted to just party, so he left his family. He also had some pretty crappy things to say about his ex-wife which sounded pretty darn petty and superficial. As my wife says, "his kids will read that book someday, and they'll hate their Dad even more".
Also, "recruiting" Papi and Manny was just wrong. If a team official had said the things he said, they'd be fined and likely otherwise penalized for tampering. The whole "they disrespected me" drivel diminished Damon as well. If he hadn't said those things, he would have gotten a much warmer greeting.
If I'd had the opportunity to make a sign for Monday night, it would have said something like, "Thanks for the memories Johnny... now ****!"

Damon is actually pretty good with his kids. But, as for my comments, they reflect that he treats people with respect on a day-to-day basis. He's a very nice guy, treats the media well, etc. There are ALOT of jerks in baseball, and he isnt one of them.

Seanez and Tavarez are a fantastic middle relief duo!
Maybe we could get Rich Garces back?
